Dominic’s POV

The lanterns swung in the breeze, spreading golden light over a party that had gone from calm to wild in a matter of minutes.

If I had been able to witness it from the outside that night, I would have known. This was wrong. It wasn’t what we’d planned at all. None of this should have happened.

But that was the thing-I couldn’t watch it from the outside. Because I was in it, caught beneath that warm haze of golden light swinging over the laughing faces. And it felt so… good.

I turned slowly, face tilted up toward the sky, smiling like an idiot. The lanterns swayed, the moon half-full and bright behind them, smiling back down at me. It was a warm spring night, a little breezy. I hardly felt the balmy air against my skin. I was too hot, sweat coating my back, my neck, everywhere.

I had peeled my jacket off at some point, discarding it in the grass somewhere without a though. I think I’d ripped the buttons off my shirt, but I couldn’t tell. It was all a fog. All a haze.

All I knew was that everything was beautiful, and perfect, and the night was so sweet.

Except-

Where was Ellie?

I stopped my slow spinning and looked down, scanning the sea of faces. I saw bodies twirling, girls laughing, two males who had probably not ever played patty cake in their lives sitting cross-legged on the stage, playing

like children.

Ellie wasn’t among them.

“Ellie?” I called out. My own voice came out high, warbled, unfamiliar. I stifled a laugh and began stumbling toward the crowd on legs that felt like they were made of rope. “Eeeelllie…”

The ground warped and swayed in front of me. The crowd didn’t part for me. I bumped into someone, a girl, sending her sprawling across the grass. She didn’t seem to care, already rolling onto her back, giggling. Her clumsy fingers swiped at my ankles but I kept walking.

“Ellie…”

There.

Up ahead, I spotted her. She was with Lucas.

I froze. I saw Lucas stand, wrap his arms around her-and I saw her embrace him back.

It wasn’t the embrace of two friends. It was the embrace of star-crossed lovers. The kind of thing I saw over Ellie’s shoulder whenever she was reading those books she thought I didn’t know she secretly liked to read during her spare time.

In that instant, as I saw them draw closer together, her belly pressed between them, all the warmth I’d felt was suddenly gone. In its place was something cold. Even the lantern light seemed to go gray.

I wasn’t sure how long I stood there, watching them. Time was a construct, a meaningless thing. There was no past or present or future, not this timeline or the last one-just her. Ellie. The one constant across multiple lives. Reincarnated, following the same path each time, over and over again on a loop.

Leaving me.

Eventually, she pulled back. Lucas’s hands fell to his sides. Her cheeks were flushed.

The blur intensified.

When I blinked, I found myself standing back in my original spot. Or maybe it was another one; I couldn’t tell. The grass was cold under my bare feet. Where were my shoes? Did I even care?

I saw Ellie’s face as she walked by me. It was full of sorrow. Her lips moved, but she didn’t come for me. Her hand went across her belly, and she turned, running off toward the forest.
