“Suicide?! This hasn’t occurred in a very long time, at least not while Nikolai was still employed at Nexus.” Maria Novikov made clear how deeply upset she was by the news of the maid’s suicide.

While the maid’s body was removed, Maria gathered all of the chief servants in the courtroom in anticipation of Nikolai’s arrival. But she didn’t want to keep her opinions to herself.

The servants all bent their heads as she angrily paced around. They were still reeling from what had happened.

Due to Nikolai, suicide was a common practice among the castle servants three hundred years ago. No one was aware of his techniques for coercing them into killing themselves, but they were all aware that it was a terrifying strategy that sapped a person’s will to live.

“I do not believe that we should place blame. Don’t the servants also have a personal life?” Danil murmured glumly, his claws slowly and fiercely erupting as he and Sasha entered the chamber. “However, I believe Nikolai

did it.”

Sasha rolled her eyes. Danil would never back Nikolai. “We shouldn’t blame anyone.” She remarked to Maria.

“I’m sorry, I can’t help it.” Maria let out a breath.

“Anastasia said that she would examine the body. The maid isn’t actually that significant. The dragon that lives in our home and the war on the front lines are just two of the many things we must deal with.” Danil mumbled, keeping his voice monotone and his eyes fixed on his claws.

“Can you please stop talking? Sasha questioned, hearing enough of his

comments.

“I am free to express myself, Sasha.” He spoke, feigning a grin before turning to face his too impatient mother. “Nikolai won’t be coming,

mother.”

Maria grimaced. “Is he ignorant of this?”

“He is. I don’t think it bothers him. To be completely honest, neither am I concerned.” Danil acknowledged, gently shrugging his shoulders.

Sasha opened her mouth, but a strong dark energy suddenly filled the space, compelling her to seal her lips. Speak of the devil. That phrase was practically literal.

“Ow! I bit my tongue.” As he appeared at the entryway surrounded by faint mist, Nikolai moaned, theatrically fanning his opened mouth with his

hand.

Everyone turned to look at Nikolai, but he was oblivious to their very existence by still focusing on fanning his tongue.

“Ah. I wasn’t even chewing, let alone speaking.” He grumbled and then scratched his cheek, pouting.

“Wow, what a psycho.” Danil tsked, shaking his head slowly in disbelief.

Nikolai became aware of them at that point.

“Oh.” His face abruptly took on a grave expression, and his aura became incredibly menacing. It was as though he had not just been whining like a

child.

Maria called, “Alpha,” and humbly bowed her head to Nikolai.

His crimson eyes grew dimmer and flared like a wild flame. “There is nothing more to know; the maid committed suicide.” He stated icily.

Sasha was unable to merely concur with his direct assertion. “What happened to her family? They must know if something was wrong with

her or…”

“Sasha, I’ve already stated that there is nothing else to know.” Nikolai cut in with a deep growl and she clamped her lips.

Danil twitched his lips. “You are acting odd.”

“I am.” Nikolai said, his voice deep, and an ominous wide smile appeared on his face.

Danil shrugged. He was extremely creeped out by Nikolai. Sadly, the creep was now his Alpha. He still struggles with that.

“Very well, then.” Maria sighed and then turned to face the other maids. “You make all go, but ensure that nothing like this ever occurs again.”

Without raising their eyes to meet Nikolai’s, they all lowered their heads and left the room.

Unexpectedly, Nikolai disappeared from his spot and suddenly reappeared behind Maria, grabbing hold of her hair and yanking it back. “Do you want me to confess that I had something to do with that maid’s death?”

His firm hold on Maria’s hair was causing her excruciating agony, and she whimpered in protest.

“Mother!” Danil cried out in shock then he growled, his eyes changed into their blue wolf-like form. “Release her! What on earth are you doing?

Nikolai gave Danil a lifeless look. “If you don’t want me to snap her neck right here, shut your trap.”

Sasha’s eyes widened. “What are you doing Nikolai?”

“Can’t you feel the lingering dark magic around her?” Nikolai questioned, tightening his hold on Maria’s hair.

“What?!” Sasha sputtered. She wasn’t feeling anything, and it was

impossible for a pure-bred lycan like Maria to possess dark magic.

Maria was the most quiet member of the family, rarely participating in disputes that affected the whole unit. Sasha pondered this for a while, wondering why she couldn’t feel any dark magic. If Nikolai was able to sense it but she was unable to, it indicated that it wasn’t just any dark magic but rather an old form of dark magic.

“Let go of her, you maniac!” Danil cried, removing a dagger from the pocket of his coat.

Nikolai pushed Maria away, and Danil hastened to stop his mother from falling. Maria had a deathly pale appearance that gave the impression that she had seen the light.

“Mother! Are you okay?” Danil worriedly enquired.

Maria gave a slow nod before turning to face Nikolai, who was glumly focusing on her. “Mariana Novikov. You don’t have to present yourself as this family’s most upright member.”

“Why do you treat me so disrespectfully? Maria asked, making no attempt to conceal her anger at his remarks. “I don’t understand what you’re saying. You are fully aware that I am unable to use any form of magic.”

“I am.” Nikolai cooed.

“So why are you suddenly assaulting me?!” She snapped.
