Nova stared blankly for a long moment before Samuel's words finally registered. She nodded, her heart settling into an eerie calm.
"Samuel, Tristan told me that once the baby is born, he'll divorce me and give the child to Yvette to raise. But the car crash... I lost them. They were twins... If I tell him now that the babies are gone, he'll target my dad and my brother. I don't have the power to protect them right now."
Samuel's gaze dropped to her stomach, an unspoken storm brewing in his eyes. After a heavy silence, he spoke.
"Come back to the company. I'll get your onboarding paperwork sorted immediately. As for lawyers, I'll find them. I'll have them take over your father's and brother's cases. As long as you can pull off this government project, money won't be an issue. You'll even have the state's protection. Tristan won't be able to touch you."
"I was just discussing this with the Professor. Once you establish a solid track record domestically, he says the state will sponsor you for an overseas assignment at the International Joint Research Institute. With the government backing you, no one will be able to dig into your background. By the time you return, you won't be the same Nova Clarke anymore." Nova had always been their most prized protégé; anyone who had ever witnessed her brilliance was left utterly awestruck.
But Nova never imagined that in just one afternoon, Samuel and the Professor would completely map out her entire future.
All the injustice and pain she had suppressed suddenly broke free, and she sobbed uncontrollably.
Samuel pulled out a tissue and handed it to her.
"You're recovering from a miscarriage. Crying right now will permanently damage your eyes. You're on strict bedrest for a week. I've found an excellent holistic specialist to prescribe some remedies for you. Take your medicine, focus on healing, and avoid any extreme emotional swings, understand?"
Nova nodded. "Okay. I understand."
Samuel had his assistant bring over the contract, and Nova signed her employment agreement.
On paper, she was hired as his assistant, but in reality, she was heading the classified government project and pulling the salary of a vice president.
Just a few hours ago, Samuel had fully intended to bring Yvette into the company, thinking her skills were decent enough to play second fiddle to Nova.
Now...
"Are you blind?!"
The Professor had roared through the phone.
"Who cares how talented this Yvette Sellers is? She's a homewrecker who forced her way into someone else's marriage! Her character is fundamentally rotten! I might not have long left, but Nova is my one and only protégé. No one can ever compare to her. Don't you dare let that woman into your company. If Tristan Forrester loves her so much, let him buy her a career!"
Samuel agreed without hesitation and immediately had HR reject Yvette's application.
He never breathed a word of this to Nova.
As Nova ate a few bites of food in her hospital bed and regained some strength, a notification popped up on her phone. It was from a blocked number.
"Go to Forrester Hospital for a checkup. Send the results to Abdul before sunset."
