"Got it!"
James flung open the rear door immediately.
Dylan climbed in, cradling Robin in his arms. Behind him, Fleur scrambled to follow, sobbing, "Dylan, let me come with you!"
Without even raising his eyes, Dylan stared at the limp boy in his arms, his voice cutting through the air like ice: "Get in the front."
"Alright." Fleur scrambled into the passenger seat without another word.
James circled to the driver’s side, hopped in, threw the car into gear, and spun the steering wheel. The black Maybach tore away, vanishing into the darkness.
Mrs. Shaw and Mr. Carter stood by the main gates, staring blankly after them. It wasn’t until the taillights completely faded into the night that Mrs. Shaw snapped out of it.
She turned to the elderly man. "Mr. Carter, what on earth just happened?"
The man simply shrugged. "Don’t look at me, I have absolutely no idea."
"I’m heading back!" Mrs. Shaw waved him off and walked back next door.
After dinner, everyone was gathering in the first-floor lounge, brewing tea and watching a movie. Lily had already woken up, eaten her dinner, and was now playing with the guesthouse’s resident old cat.
Mrs. Shaw walked in, sat down next to Elise, and lowered her voice. "You will not believe what I just saw next door."
Elise tore her gaze away from the movie screen. Noting the grim expression on Mrs. Shaw’s face, she raised an eyebrow playfully. "Did Dylan and Fleur kiss?"
Mrs. Shaw was speechless for a beat and then glared at her nervously. "What absolute nonsense! If I actually had to witness something that horrific, I’d go blind on the spot!"
"Then why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?"
Mrs. Shaw sighed. "I saw Dylan carrying Robin down from the second floor. The poor boy was wrapped in a bath towel, his hair was soaking wet, and he looked completely unresponsive! Dylan and Fleur just rushed him to the hospital."
Elise knit her brows. "But Robin was perfectly fine when he went back this afternoon."
"Exactly. How did he end up like that in just a few hours?" Mrs. Shaw sighed heavily. "I tried to ask, but Dylan looked ready to kill someone and completely ignored me. Judging by his face, the kid’s condition isn’t good..."
Hearing this, Elise’s expression turned somber.
"If that’s the case, shouldn’t we go check on him?" Alexander suggested. "After all, Robin was out on the water with us today. If he’s sick, I bear some responsibility."
"How can you blame yourself for this? Dylan was the one who dumped his own kid on us. What right does he have to blame you for anything?" Josh chimed in. He paused before adding, "Besides, we were all out on the same boat, and Lily has a much weaker constitution than Robin, yet she’s perfectly fine, isn’t she? This might not even have anything to do with the boat trip. Fleur has had him back for hours—who knows how she was taking care of him!"
"I agree with Josh," Mrs. Shaw said. "And honestly, the way Robin looked didn’t seem like a normal illness. His lips were turning blue and he was totally limp. It looked like... like he was unconscious."
"Unconscious?" Elise’s heart clenched violently. She instinctively placed a hand over her chest. "I’ve lived with Robin before. He doesn’t have a weak constitution; in fact, he’s much healthier than Lily. Even if he caught a chill out on the water, he shouldn’t have fallen this violently ill all of a sudden..."
"Yeah, he was perfectly fine eating and drinking with us these past few days," Mrs. Shaw muttered, thoroughly perplexed. "How did he end up like this after spending just one afternoon with his own mother?"
Rina paused for a moment. "What did Robin eat out on the water today?"
"Everything was just packed lunch from the guesthouse. The only thing cooked fresh on the boat was the fish soup, but that was just standard yellow croaker," Alexander replied.
Elise added, "Robin isn’t allergic to seafood. He’s had yellow croaker at home plenty of times."
"Well, isn’t that bizarre?" Mrs. Shaw took a sip of her tea. "So, are we going to the hospital to check on him?"
Hearing this, everyone turned their eyes toward Elise.
Elise’s brows were tightly knit. Even though logic repeatedly hammered into her head that Robin had both his father and mother by his side and didn’t need an outsider like her to worry, her chest felt suffocatingly tight. A heavy weight pressed down on her, making even breathing feel difficult.
She pressed her lips together. "Let’s wait a bit. With Dylan there, nothing truly terrible should happen to the child."
Dylan stared down at her, his eyes dark and intense. He said nothing.
An hour later, the doors to the resuscitation room swung open again. The attending physician stepped out, pulling off his sterile mask.
Dylan immediately pressed, "Doctor, is my son going to be alright?"
"The child has acute gastroenteritis, which triggered the vomiting, and his fever was caused by a bacterial infection. We’ve administered medication, and his temperature is coming down. The head CT shows no bleeding, but the impact to the back of his head could cause a mild concussion. I recommend hospitalizing him for a few days of observation."
Hearing this, the suffocating weight lifted slightly from both Dylan and Fleur’s chests.
After Robin was transferred to a regular ward, Dylan immediately stepped outside to call Oliver, instructing him to have Jessica Sanders fly out to Rainport immediately.
Listening to his instructions from a few paces away, Fleur felt a wave of confusion—and an even greater wave of intense anxiety. She was terrified of what Robin might tell his father once he woke up. But he was bound to wake up eventually. What was she supposed to do?
Regret washed over her like a tidal wave. She cursed herself for losing her temper. It was all Elise’s fault! If Elise hadn’t provoked her so viciously, she would never have lost control and laid a hand on the boy.
Dylan finished his call and slid his phone away.
Fleur asked immediately, "Dylan, is Dr. Sanders a pediatrician?"
"Yes." Dylan looked at her, offering no further explanation.
Fleur didn’t press. Dylan doted on Robin to an extreme degree, so it made sense that he would want a trusted family doctor to fly out and double-check the diagnosis just to be safe.
"Fleur, did Robin start feeling sick the exact moment he got home?" Dylan asked abruptly.
"He said he was sleepy the moment he walked through the door. Seeing how sluggish he was, I thought he was just exhausted from playing, so I didn’t think much of it and let him nap." Fleur lowered her head, wiping at her eyes to hide the sharp flash of guilt.
She then continued softly, "When it was time for dinner, I went to wake him and realized he was burning up. When I picked him up, he suddenly threw up. I panicked... I’ve never dealt with anything like this before, and you weren’t there, so I completely lost my head... I’m so sorry. I’m completely useless. I failed to protect him. I don’t deserve to be his mother..."
