Chapter 136
Cora asked Fiona, “Fiona, Joseph has his eyes on Yvonne. He’s trying to find Lacey. What do you think?”
For the first time in years, she felt powerless when it came to Joseph. She still believed the children were his, and their married life remained intensely passionate. She tolerated Joseph far more than she tolerated anyone else.
The last time she tried to manipulate Joseph through the woman at the hospital dormitory, Joseph had refused to yield and even pushed back harder.
“If he does, he’ll start connecting the dots. He’ll learn things he shouldn’t know. If he’d just listened to you, Cora, everything would be fine. But he could cause some serious trouble if he keeps digging.” More and more, Fiona found herself viewing Joseph as a troublesome thorn in everyone’s side.
Cora frowned. “What do you think he’s actually trying to do by finding Lacey? He knows I arranged everything, and he knows my intentions. He actually said he wanted to rekindle things with Lacey. How should I interpret that?”
Fiona’s eyes widened. “Well, that doesn’t sound like something Joseph would do.”
Internally, she was shocked at how shameless Joseph was. Still, Joseph had some guts to suggest something like that to Cora.
“Forget it.” Cora waved it off and dismissed Fiona.
After weighing her options, she sent a message to a contact on her phone labelled Lacey Shaw. “Go meet my husband. If he makes any improper advances toward you, call the police and have him detained for a few days. If he doesn’t cross the line, persuade him to leave Yvonne alone. Handle it as you see fit.”
After sending the message, she picked up another phone and dialed a number she knew by heart. “I’ll come see you soon… It’s my fault I’ve neglected you, but the one at home has been making a scene recently, so I couldn’t get away… I’ll do anything you want.”
Meanwhile, Joseph received some new information from Dylan. Apparently, Yvonne used to be a
hostess at Maroon Mansion.
Maroon Mansion?
The name immediately caught Joseph’s attention. When Natalie had followed Cora before, she had also been discovered shortly after reaching Maroon Mansion. Clearly, it was no ordinary place.
Joseph looked at them. “He’s awake, but he’s still intubated and can’t speak. How do you intend on questioning him?”
The officer said, “We just need him to identify a license plate number. If he can confirm it for us, we can proceed with the investigation.”
Joseph reviewed Dylan’s chart again before personally examining him. After making a few adjustments, Dylan was able to write by hand.
That afternoon, Joseph performed another. At one point, Walt entered the operating room and saw that the procedure was going smoothly.
When Joseph stepped away briefly to wash up, Walt said, “The remaining steps aren’t particularly difficult. Why don’t you leave the rest to the team? You should leave early and go pick up your children.”
Joseph replied calmly, “Dr. Loughlin, you don’t need to concern yourself with my family matters.”
They weren’t his children, and he had no intention of wasting any more effort on them from now on.
