Chapter 218
“Selling herself? You’d better watch your mouth, Joseph!” Helen was deeply offended.
“Watch what I say? I guess it does sound harsh,” Joseph said, patting his own cheek in mock shame. “I’m still Cora’s husband. The fact that my wife has to earn her fortune that way is humiliating enough. I can barely show my face in public anymore!”
He leaned over the table, his eyes boring into hers. “And what about you? Doesn’t it disgust you to live off the money she earned that way? No, you’re proud of it. The Lowells only rose through the ranks because of Cora.
“You went from a middle-tier family in Jenton to one of the most powerful. The only reason Cora refuses to get a divorce is that she’s afraid of losing her money, status, and influence.”
Helen fell silent.
Joseph quickly finished his meal, tidied up, and took a slow sip of his coffee. “You and Bernard need to stop accusing me of divorcing her for a payout. Because if you keep it up, I promise you I won’t walk away empty-handed. I’ll demand a full half of
Cora’s assets.
“In fact, I could work with the Croma faction now. If they back me, I could easily drag Cora through a brutal court battle. Under the law, and with enough evidence, it won’t matter a damn bit whether she admits anything. The court will force the divorce and split her assets.
“The only reason I haven’t done that yet is that I don’t want the kids caught in the crossfire.”
Helen scoffed. “You and Grace seem awfully close. You’ve probably already joined forces with Croma.”
Joseph shrugged indifferently. “Grace? Yes, I’ve slept with her. But Cora was the one who drugged her in the first place. Grace had nowhere else to turn, so she came to me.”
“That’s slander-“Helen protested.
“You have absolutely no idea what Cora does outside of the house!” Joseph cut her off, having zero interest in debating the facts. “And now there’s Warren. Cora keeps denying everything because I don’t have photos or videos of them in bed together. But what about you? What do you honestly think?”
Helen stiffened. “What do I think?”
“Cora doesn’t want to divorce you, but you could always just disappear. Just like when you went on that retreat at the monastery. We can help you leave Jenton and set you up overseas. As long as you cut off all contact with Cora, things will naturally come to an end.
Joseph sneered. “Aren’t you just afraid that I’llexpose Cora’s scandals and disgrace the family? No, this is exactly what you deserve. You should share the blame for failing to raise your daughter with a shred of decency. You’re Cora’s parents. You should prepare yourselves to face the consequences of her actions.
“And stop pretending you’re noble people. You’re all hypocrites. I’m not leaving Jenton, and I’m sure as hell not running. I’ll face everything head-on.”
Helen’s composure broke, and she shouted, “Joseph, you’re asking to be killed!”
Joseph burst into a cold, hollow laugh. “I’ve been married for over ten years, only to find out that my children aren’t even mine. Cora’s capable of sleeping with someone as disgusting as Warren, and god knows how many other inen. Tell me, what exactly do I have left to live for?
“If you want me dead, go ahead and order the hit. Have someone run me over with a car the second I walk out the door.”
With that, Joseph grabbed his coat and bag, turned on his heel, and slammed the restaurant door shut behind him.
