Joseph didn’t want to waste time arguing with Helen. He stubbed out his cigarette and went to check on Frank. Instead of treating Frank, he reviewed his data in the ward and took his pulse.

Joseph also told Frank that his wife and children were on the road to recovery. If everything went well, they could be discharged and go home in a week.

When Frank heard that, Joseph could see the gratitude in his eyes.

He also mentioned that he would be staying at Frank’s apartment near Brooke’s school for a while. At that moment, he noticed a flicker of disdain in Frank’s expression, and even a sense of relief.

As a businessman, Frank understood the trade-offs between gain and loss.

Joseph had sharp hearing and immediately noticed someone eavesdropping outside. He stopped talking and opened the door to see Helen standing there.

“Were you talking to Frank? Can he talk now?” Helen looked slightly embarrassed but didn’t say anything. She didn’t want things to end up awkward.

“Yes. He can talk now. You can go in and have a chat with him.” Joseph stepped aside.

Helen entered the ward and tried speaking to Frank, but received no response. That was when she realized Joseph had pulled a fast one on her.

Not long after, Paige brought over Nathan’s post-op X-rays. Joseph went through them and found that the bone alignment was accurate and his blood vessels were functioning well.

Once Nathan regained consciousness, he would be transferred to a general ward to save on hospitalization costs.

In the afternoon, Joseph assigned all the tasks before leaving the hospital. He went to a private villa district, where Mavis was already waiting for him.

“Dr. Hart, you really took your time getting here. Sorry to trouble you again.” Mavis held Joseph in high regard.

Her health had been deteriorating too. After all, things within the family weren’t peaceful, and they hadn’t even found the culprit responsible for her cholera infection. It was like another threat hanging over her.

“Because of you, Joseph. Now that we’re alone, I don’t mind sharing this with you. Jenton has always been really united, especially since the Lowells rose to power.

“Under Cora’s leadership, the Jenton faction became more united than ever. No matter how close the Croma faction worked together, we wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what we did lately.

“Your issue with Cora gave us an opening. Some things are better left unsaid. You’ll understand what I mean someday.”

Joseph was taken aback. He never expected the Croma faction to take advantage of his conflict with Cora, and he hadn’t realized he had that much influence. Of course, Mavis might have only said all that just to get him on her side.

He thought about it for some time before asking, “What about things between Grace and me? Was that part your plan too?”

“Not at all, but I’m okay with it. Grace is my daughter-in-law, so that makes her family. I don’t want to remain a widow forever. I support you two as a couple!” Mavis clearly looked helpless.
