Peyton asked Wesley to arrange the schedule. She hoped Joseph could treat him as much as possible before he went into seclusion, and her father could recover more quickly.

Peyton didn’t just want Joseph to treat Wesley’s legs. She also wanted him to address a few other ailments.

That night, when Joseph was treating Wesley, he saw Peyton and her subordinates drag Marla in, her arms pinned behind her back.

“Joseph, this woman was sneaking around outside the clinic. She’s clearly up to no good, so I brought her in. What should we do with her?”

“If you tell me the truth, I’ll speak to Dr. Geller. I’ll overlook the rules and risks involved and go save your husband.

“Otherwise, don’t try to guilt-trip me by saying doctors should treat patients and save lives. There are plenty of doctors in this world. You can always try begging them to save your husband.”

“I really don’t know anything, Joseph. Can’t you save my husband first? I’ll look into it for you later,” Marla said. She realized he was starting to waver and saw a chance that he might be willing to help her.

“I saved your family last time, and you promised to repay my kindness. In the end, you blew me off.

“You went back on your word, and I’ll never trust someone like you again! Don’t ever show your face in front of me again. Please leave.”

With a wave of his hand, Joseph gestured for Peyton to see Marla out.

Wesley caught the hidden implication and believed Joseph’s words were directed at him too. He thought to himself, “This doctor is no ordinary man!”

Wesley said tentatively, “Dr. Hart, even though we can’t interfere in your family affairs, please let me know if there’s anything you need. We’ll do our best to help you.”

Joseph said, “Don’t overthink it. I’m back today, and I’m not going anywhere tonight. Let’s go inside. I’ll give all of you a checkup.”

Seeing that Natalie refused to greet him, he said, “I know I’m not your biological father, but you called me ‘Dad’ for so many years. Would it really kill you to say it one more time?”

“Dad!” Natalie mustered the courage to greet him.

“Bernard. Helen.” As Joseph caught sight of them inside the house, he uttered the names that used to roll off his tongue so naturally. Now, they just felt strangely distant.

Bernard and Helen had no idea what was going on. They greeted him first before hurrying off to inform Cora.

“Cora, come back now. Joseph’s here, and he… he’s acting really strange!”
