Chapter 593
Jenna asked, “So you also think of me as just another body you’ve been with?”
“Wow, you jumped to that conclusion pretty fast! So why don’t you tell me what I should do instead?” Joseph remarked.
“What can I possibly say? Am I supposed to ask you to drop everything and leave Jenton with me right now so we can just shack up without a care in the world? Do I even have the right to ask that?”
Joseph said with a chuckle, “Actually, you do. You could ask for a lot more.”
“But you wouldn’t actually agree to it,” Jenna cut in.
She knew how stubborn and headstrong he was. Besides, this “Henry” persona he was wearing wasn’t even the real him.
“Feels better now that you’ve gotten that off your chest, doesn’t it? Don’t carry all that negativity into your life and work.”
Joseph stubbed out his cigarette. “I’ll deal with Yara. You just keep helping me keep my real identity under wraps.”
Jenna asked, “How are you going to deal with her? Are you going to have her killed?”
“She’s still useful. I haven’t figured out how she and Cora played me, or what they’ve been doing behind my back. She knows a lot of Cora’s secrets, and I need her to talk. Also, simply killing her now wouldn’t make me feel any better.”
“Jeez, you’re honestly an angel and a devil rolled into one. Just promise me you won’t run away from me and become a monk once this is all over.”
Once Jenna was calmer, she ate the dinner Joseph had brought back. Meanwhile, Joseph thought about how Cora was going to overturn the paternity test results. He couldn’t wait to see how she was going to pull this one off.
At 9:00 pm, Joseph was still poring over medical files when he suddenly caught a whiff of a distinct perfume.
He turned his head, and the stunning sight almost made his jaw drop. Jenna had just stepped out of the shower, done her hair and makeup, and was now standing in front of him.
Instead of making a move, Joseph simply helped Jenna put on her pajamas. He had no intention of taking advantage of her.
“Joseph, d-do you think that little of me? I’m already throwing all my dignity out the window for you. After everything I’ve done, you still won’t sleep with me?”
“What’s the rush? I’m in my 40s, and you’re still in your early 20s. Is one night really going to make a difference? I can’t give you anything right now. If I slept with you, wouldn’t you end up resenting me?”
“No, I won’t. I’m doing this because I want to.”
“Nothing beats doing what you want, right? You’re only acting this way because Yara’s call has made you feel like you’re losing me. You’re just panicking. The truth is, you’re taking a gamble too.”
Joseph buttoned up her pajamas, making sure she was properly covered. He then smoothed her dark hair, regarding her with the appreciation one might have for a beautiful work of art.
“Being young and beautiful is a gift. That’s why it deserves to be cherished. And I have to be in a position where I can actually take responsibility for you.”
Seeing that Joseph wasn’t reacting at all and clearly had no intention of taking things further, Jenna finally gave up.
She sighed. “Joseph, how can you be so rational and cold?”
“Because I’ve got you, Katie, and the others backing me. Even if I don’t care about my own skin, I still have to look out for you guys. Cora knew I was the mastermind behind the fire at Lowell Group’s headquarters.
