Left with zero options, Ivy obediently dragged herself back to the master bedroom.
As luck would have it, the very second she walked through the door, she caught Alaric completely shirtless, clearly either mid-change or about to head into the shower.
Startled, Ivy immediately spun around to face the door, her heart hammering as a vicious blush consumed her face.
Her hands twisted nervously together as she stuttered out a frantic explanation.
"I... I... Stella forced me to come back here. I-I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to intrude."
Alaric tossed his discarded shirt aside, grabbing a robe as he shot a glance at the girl cowering by the door.
It seemed she had completely settled into treating this place as her own home.
She didn't even knock before entering the room anymore.
But then again, they were a married couple.
They had already done everything they shouldn't have, and everything they absolutely shouldn't have.
Alaric figured there was no point in getting worked up over it.
Before stepping into the bathroom, he tossed her a casual command. "You don't need to be so incredibly tense. Just go to sleep."
Ivy was still holding her breath.
Only when she felt certain he had vanished into the bathroom did she release a heavy exhale, turning around and tiptoeing further into the room.
As she sat on the edge of the massive mattress, her heart was still hammering relentlessly against her ribs.
Ivy had no idea why she felt so overwhelmingly guilty and terrified.
Mr. Foster fully knew they had already slept together.
He hadn't yelled at her, and he hadn't punished her.
Which meant there was a very real possibility of things continuing between them.
So what exactly was she so terrified of?
Ivy crawled into bed, yanking the covers entirely over herself.
Listening to the steady drumming of the shower from the bathroom, her traitorous mind inevitably drifted right back to that night.
Her body suddenly felt like it was consumed by fire, burning hot and leaving her mouth entirely dry.
Ivy decided she must have completely lost her mind.
How could she still dare to entertain those kinds of thoughts about Mr. Foster?
Sure, they were legally married.
But there was a very real chance that Mr. Foster was deeply in love with Elena, genuinely making her wait for him.
And this sham of a marriage was absolutely destined to end sooner or later.
So what kind of delusional fairy tale was she dreaming up?
Ivy reached up and literally slapped her own cheek.
Seeing how desperately she wanted to maintain her distance, Alaric didn't push it.
He turned off the lamp and lay down.
He forced himself to lock his thoughts down. If he didn't think about it, nothing would happen.
Ivy was banking on the exact same logic.
But the moment the two of them fell asleep, their bodies seemed completely possessed by a magnetic attraction, unconsciously gravitating toward each other until they were perfectly tangled together.
When Ivy finally woke up the next morning...
She found one of her legs thrown intimately across Alaric's waist, her head pillowed comfortably on his arm.
The very second her eyes fluttered open, she was met with the flawless, chiseled lines of his striking face, displayed perfectly right in front of her.
He was so impossibly close, and so dangerously handsome.
She could even feel the steady, warm rhythm of his breath brushing against her skin.
Ivy was paralyzed with shock.
Her limbs locked up entirely, and she stared in wide-eyed horror, desperately planning to untangle herself before Mr. Foster could wake up.
But at that exact second.
Alaric's eyes slowly peeled open.
