Ethan was lying in bed, looking entirely drained of life.
As she prepped his IV line, she asked:
"How are you feeling today?"
Ethan glanced at her, barely having the energy to speak.
"Fine."
"Alright, if nothing's out of the ordinary, I'll continue with your usual meds."
Ethan nodded, letting her do her work.
After starting the drip, Ivy changed the dressing on his side.
The wound was healing nicely.
It probably wouldn't need a bandage in another week.
It was his fractured leg that would keep him stuck in the hospital bed for a while.
Her movements were quick and practiced.
As she pulled the blanket back over him, she asked, "What do you want for lunch? I'll go get it ready."
She was his caretaker, after all.
He was generous enough not to make her stay overnight, so she had to make sure everything was flawless during the day.
Ethan still looked lethargic, his voice faint.
"Whatever. Just figure something out."
"Okay."
Seeing that he wasn't in the mood to talk, she didn't push it.
She gave a few quick instructions to the male nurse on duty, picked up her tray, and left.
Remembering the massive paycheck she was getting every month, Ivy felt obligated to put in the effort to earn it.
She headed to the supermarket to buy fresh ingredients, determined to cook him a highly nutritious meal.
By noon.
Ivy returned to Ethan's room with the prepared meal, only to freeze in horror at the scene unfolding inside.
Four or five doctors were crowded around the bed, frantically performing CPR on Ethan.
Storming over, he delivered a vicious slap across her face without a word of warning.
"How the hell are you taking care of this patient? He's the eldest grandson of the Foster family. He's practically royalty in this city! If he died on my watch, neither of our lives would be worth a dime."
The sheer force of the slap left her completely stunned.
Her ears rang, and a burning pain flared across her cheek.
She fought to keep her emotions in check, her eyes turning red as she looked up at Dr. Maxwell with sheer defiance.
"I didn't mix up his medication. I used exactly what you prescribed."
"You dare talk back? If you didn't screw up the dosage, why would his heart just stop?"
"Your job is to watch him around the clock! Where did you run off to in the middle of the day? This is gross negligence."
Dr. Maxwell glared at the rest of the room. "Call the Foster family. Tell them this caretaker is incompetent and demand a replacement immediately."
The other doctors and nurses remained silent as they scrambled back to work.
Some cleared away the resuscitation equipment, while others went to make the dreaded phone call to the Fosters.
And, of course, the entirety of the blame was pinned squarely on Ivy's shoulders.
