Until...
A sudden, sickening cramp twisted in her lower abdomen.
Accompanied by a dreaded, familiar sensation of warmth.
*Oh no.*
Panic spiking, she shoved her hands against his chest to stop him.
"Alaric... wait. We can't."
He froze above her, his voice rough. "What's wrong?"
"I... I think my time of the month just started!"
She wanted the ground to swallow her whole.
Her cycle had been delayed for days, and it chose this exact second to arrive.
Was the universe punishing her?
"..."
Alaric let out a heavy exhale, frustration coiling tight in his chest, but he immediately backed off and sat on the edge of the bed to straighten his rumpled sleepwear.
She bolted off the mattress and sprinted straight into the bathroom.
Turning on the lamp, he pinched the bridge of his nose, fighting a desperate battle for self-control.
It was just bad timing.
She had been a willing participant.
There would be other nights.
Remembering how agonizing her cramps usually were, he pushed himself up and walked over to the bathroom door.
"Are you alright in there?"
Sitting on the toilet, clutching her cramping stomach, she stared in horror at the undeniable proof of her cycle.
"I am so sorry," she called out, her voice thick with humiliation. "I think I ruined your sheets. Just give me a second, and I'll strip the bed."
He hated how subservient she always sounded.
Frowning, his voice dropped to a cold, flat tone.
"I asked if *you* were alright."
"I'm fine."
She lied, her face scrunched up in pain. Realizing she had absolutely no supplies in the master bathroom, she swallowed her pride.
"Could I... could I ask you a huge favor? Can you go to the guest room and grab a pad from the nightstand drawer?"
Mrs. Gable was fast asleep downstairs, leaving him as her only lifeline.
She had to rely on him.
He didn't argue.
He walked to the guest room, opened the drawer, and grabbed a pack without a second thought.
Returning to the door, he knocked once.
