If he kept dragging this out, it would be a miracle if Ivy didn't get suspicious.
No matter what it took, he had to resolve this completely tonight.
"No problem, leave it entirely to me."
Mason was brimming with confidence. He looked at Alaric and smirked. "By the way, what about that surprise you promised me? Can you give me a little hint?"
Alaric shut him down instantly. "No."
"Fine. Just wait right here while I throw some clothes on. I'll head downstairs and conquer that woman right now. If I can't get that antidote out of her, I'll literally eat dirt."
Mason swaggered into the walk-in closet, casually grabbing one of Alaric's outfits and slipping it on.
Fully dressed, he told Alaric to wait for the good news before strutting out the door.
Alaric let him go, settling into the armchair. He glanced at his luxury watch; it was already evening.
Inexplicably, his thoughts drifted straight to Ivy.
Usually, right around this time, Ivy would be calling to ask when he was coming home for dinner.
It was getting late, and she hadn't sent a single message.
Was she throwing a tantrum again because he hadn't touched her the past few nights?
Since she wasn't reaching out, Alaric inexplicably found himself typing out a text to her.
[I have something to handle tonight. Won't be back for dinner.]
After hitting send, he waited for her reply.
Silence.
Alaric felt a flash of irritation.
Deciding not to dwell on it, he pocketed his phone and headed downstairs.
Down in the kitchen, Mason pressed himself flush against Elena's back as she cooked, asking in a perfectly feigned tone of jealousy,
"Did you ask him to come back?"
Elena hurriedly shook her head. "I didn't!"
"Then do you still have feelings for him? Because I heard he has a long-time crush he's been in love with for years, and that's the only reason he hasn't married."
