Hanging up, Ivy immediately dialed Gemma.
It rang for a long time before someone finally answered.
"Gemma, did you skip school and go home?" Ivy asked.
Instead of her sister's voice, the shrill, venomous shrieks of their mother blasted through the speaker.
"Well, look who it is! You heartless bitch, Ivy! You threw that $200,000 settlement at us and washed your hands of us entirely. You blocked our numbers, and even knowing your father is in critical condition, you didn't even bother to show up!"
"Did you really think that settlement check could pay off the debt of us giving you life and raising you?"
"If I knew you were going to be such an ungrateful parasite, I never would have brought you into this world."
Ivy ground her molars together, her grip on the phone so tight she was surprised the screen didn't shatter.
A suffocating tightness seized her chest.
But she swallowed hard, fighting back the sting of tears.
Steelying her nerves, she took a deep, shaky breath.
"Put Gemma on the phone."
Her mother shrieked in fury.
"Who the hell is Gemma?! There is no Gemma in this house, only Faith! And unlike your cold-blooded self, Faith actually cares whether her own father lives or dies!"
Ivy felt as though a jagged blade had been twisted into her heart, stealing the air from her lungs.
For Gemma's sake, she forced her tone into absolute neutrality.
"If you want me to pay, hand the phone to Gemma."
The promise of money instantly shifted the dynamic. The older woman turned to find Gemma, shoving the phone into her hands while firing off one last insult.
"Don't you dare end up like Ivy. She's been a ruthless sociopath her whole life. She'd step over her own parents' dead bodies. She's going to rot in hell."
Taking the phone, Gemma slipped quietly into the hospital stairwell.
"Ivy..."
Ivy's voice cracked like a whip.
Ivy refused to let her sisters be dragged down by such toxic anchors.
"Ivy, I just can't be as ruthless as you. I know they treated us horribly, but they're still our parents. At the very least, I need to know I did the right thing so I can live with myself."
Gemma was entirely unswayed.
Her blind loyalty frustrated Ivy to no end.
But could she really just hang up and abandon her?
If she did, she wouldn't have a single family member left in this world.
She wouldn't even have anyone to confide in.
Besides, she had shared a deep, unbreakable bond with her sisters since childhood.
She could ignore her parents and her brother, but she could never turn her back on Hazel and Gemma.
Swallowing the bitter lump in her throat, realizing logic wouldn't work, Ivy finally surrendered.
"I'll ask my husband to loan me a few thousand dollars. You get your ass back to class. The second you're back at school, I'll transfer the money to them. If you stay there, they won't see a single dime from me."
