He Gave Me Hearing, Then Taught Me What Silence Really Means novel Chapter 179

Her heart felt like it was being ripped apart.

"Why do you always hold onto these grudges? Did we ever let you starve? You grew up safe and healthy, didn't you? This is how we all grew up! Look at the girls in our village who were forced into marriage before they even grew up. Do you know how miserable their lives are? Your father and I wanted nothing more than for you to get a good education. We didn't marry you off as a teenager! We always believed education would change your destiny. The day you were born, your dad swore he would sell everything we owned just to send you to school. And how did you repay us?! It was Capital University! You threw it away like it was garbage! Juniper, ask yourself, do you really think you didn't let us down?!"

Juniper failing to graduate from Capital University was the greatest regret of Beatrice's life.

The day she found out, she had nearly thrown herself into the river.

She still remembered the day Juniper was accepted. The Lane house was packed with guests, fireworks echoing, ribbons flying, even receiving a cash reward from the local government. She and Walter had never felt so proud.

It was all because of their brilliant daughter. They drank so much that night, crying tears of absolute joy.

They had always said education changes destinies, and Juniper was finally going to escape the grueling life of a farmer.

Their daughter was going to be somebody.

But now, mother and daughter harbored nothing but deep-seated resentment for one another. The hatred was so potent that just looking at each other made their chests ache.

Beatrice furiously wiped her tears. "So what if I had an affair? Your father cheated first! He was the one who betrayed me! June, when I saw how hard you were studying in high school, I cut ties with all those men. I knew you were going to be successful, and I couldn't bear the thought of anyone whispering behind your back, saying your mother was a tramp. I hid it as best as I could, but you still found out."

Arguments like this never had a winner, especially between a mother and daughter.

It was just an endless cycle of dragging out the most humiliating secrets and plunging daggers into each other's hearts.

There were no victors in these fights. It only dragged them deeper into the suffocating mud.

The draft in the hospital corridor was bitterly cold. It was June, but the chill refused to fade.

Juniper had no energy left to rip open old wounds. She turned away. "I will find a way to deal with Dad's situation."

Beatrice hesitated, wanting to ask what her plan was. Was she really going to crawl back to the Saint family?

She desperately wanted to keep Juniper away from them, but she knew that pushing the issue now would only make Juniper hate her more.
