Ottilie was in the middle of eating a slice of fruit cake baked by Yvonne.
Yorath suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
Caught off guard, she blurted out, "What are you doing here?"
He glanced at her stomach. "You went to see Mr. Walden again?"
"His leg isn't fully healed yet, so I went to check on him." Even though she hadn't spotted the medical assistant.
She knew Yorath had placed someone there to monitor him.
It was completely expected that her movements were tracked.
What she didn't expect was for Yorath to show up so abruptly.
"Did you buy a gift?" He sat down next to her, his tone surprisingly mild.
"No." Her mind had been preoccupied with so many things that bringing a gift hadn't even crossed it.
"Next time, we'll go together and pick something out." Yorath glanced at her stomach again. "It looks a bit bigger."
Ottilie said, "I've been eating a lot."
"But you're not gaining any weight." To him, she looked far too thin; she needed to put on at least twenty pounds.
"I will in a few days. Yorath, I've read over the contract. Can you give me two more days to think about it?"
Tomorrow, she would be making her escape.
"Alright." He checked his watch. "It's six o'clock. Go change your clothes. I'm taking you out."
Alarm bells rang in Ottilie's head, but she forced a nonchalant tone. "Where to?"
Yorath replied, "Back to the estate."
"What?" She couldn't hide her shock this time.
"Why?" She had never been allowed in before, and now she had zero desire to cross that threshold.
"You're pregnant. It's time you met the family."
"I am not pregnant."
He reached out, gently caressing her cheek. "Tilly, your cycle always starts on the fifteenth."
Today was the seventeenth, and her period hadn't arrived.
What Yorath didn't know was that her cycle was entirely unpredictable now.
Yvonne, who managed her daily care, was the only one who knew the truth.
Years ago, Ottilie's cycle had been precise.
