I Stopped Waiting and Started Loving novel Chapter 42

Dr. Zimmerman shook his head and lowered his voice. "I heard her mention the National Medical Council, which I thought was odd, so I asked a contact over there to look into it."

"That's when I found out that six years ago, her grandfather, Harrison Hayes, treated a government official. The patient didn't make it, and the family, along with the Council, ruled it a major medical malpractice incident. Not long after, Harrison passed away. The rumor was that he committed suicide out of guilt."

"Because of that incident, the National Medical Council and the Federal Health Authority completely blacklisted the Hayes family."

"That girl has applied for the exam multiple times. Either her application gets inexplicably rejected during the review process, or, even if she scores the highest in the exam, her paperwork magically encounters 'issues' at the last minute. In short, both organizations are keeping their foot on her neck, making sure she never gets that license."

Sterling drew in a sharp breath, his brows furrowing deeply.

What did a grandfather's alleged suicide have to do with a young girl?

Logically, the authorities had zero legal right to restrict a citizen's ability to take an exam and earn a license based on the actions of a previous generation.

But Sterling understood all too well the corrupt inner workings of those councils and authorities. Banding together to crush an orphaned girl with no background was sickeningly easy for them.

"What a shame. Such a brilliant talent." Sterling shook his head helplessly.

Returning to his director's office from the clinic, Sterling stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows.

His mind kept replaying the decisive strike of Bonnie's slap in the lobby, and the unyielding spirit she displayed while defending herself.

Sterling smiled in amusement. Twirling his phone in his hand, he finally couldn't resist opening his messaging app and sending a text to Quentin Vance.

[Your wife is really interesting.]

He waited about five minutes, but there was no response.

Sterling clicked his tongue and rapidly typed another message: [Is it really just a contract marriage? You're actually divorcing in three years?]

This time, the reply came through almost immediately—a single, ice-cold word.

[Yes.]

Looking at that word, Sterling let out a low chuckle.

He didn't reply.

He simply tossed his phone onto the desk and leaned back in his chair, lost in thought.

...

As soon as her shift ended, Seraphina couldn't wait to leave the hospital.

She felt incredibly wronged and desperately needed someone to lean on.

Pulling out her phone, she quickly dialed Parrish's number.

"Parrish, are you free tonight? I'd love to grab dinner together." Her voice carried a deliberate touch of softness and grievance.
