But both Evan and Amos knew the truth.
The moment Stella left Seaborne, there were things Evan could no longer control.
He had believed he could guarantee her safety.
But could he really?
Not in a place like Eirden.
Things there were nowhere near as simple as he had imagined.
Evan said nothing.
His chest was already tight with panic, and Amos’s words only made it worse.
He remembered all the times he had promised Stella that he would keep her safe.
Now every word felt like a blade cutting into his heart.
Just then, Amos’s phone rang.
It was the person investigating whether another faction had been present that day.
Amos answered.
“Talk.”
The call was on speaker.
“Sir, there was indeed a fourth group at the scene.”
Amos instinctively looked at Evan.
Evan’s gaze locked on the phone.
“Whose people?” Amos asked.
“Silas’s. General Litt’s younger brother.”
Both men froze.
Silas?
Litt’s presence had always been so overwhelming that few people paid attention to his younger brother.
Evan and Amos had overlooked him too.
But no matter how insignificant Silas might have seemed beside Litt, he was still Litt’s brother.
And he had relied on Litt for nearly everything.
Now that Litt was dead, Silas had more reason than anyone to seek revenge.
“You think Silas’s people took Stella?” Amos asked.
If that were true, things had just become far worse.
There was no question how much Silas hated Stella.
The man was obsessive, ruthless, and unpredictable.
If his people had taken her, she might not survive.
