“He’s reached level 10. Do you think he’s been to the Central World?” Maddox folded his arms, his long fingers tapping steadily against his forearm. The metal gauntlet made a sharp, clinking sound with every tap.
Merrick could hear the unease in his tone. The fearless, perfectly composed Maddox was actually shaken.
Gillian said, “He’s been there. He has this strange rain that erases three days of memory. I’ve never even heard of such a thing.”
She shrugged and nodded toward the compound behind her. “He basically wiped the whole 9th Legion clean. The Department of Justice beastmen lost the last three days of their memories, and they’re wandering around trying to piece together what happened.”
Merrick fell silent, stunned.
Maddox stopped tapping his arm, spun around, and fixed Gillian with a terrible stare. “Say that again.”
Gillian said, “He wiped the whole 9th Legion clean.”
Maddox frowned. “Not that part.”
Gillian raised an eyebrow. “He has this rain called Oblivion Rain that erases three days of memory from anyone it touches.”
Maddox’s breathing grew ragged. At last, he covered his face with both hands, a bitter mixture of laughter and sobbing breaking out of his throat.
He murmured, “Ralph, what on earth have you been doing? He’s been using Oblivion Rain on me this whole time. I kept losing chunks of three-day memory, and I thought it was just my gene power going haywire. It was the rain all along.”
Merrick stepped in front of his hunched brother. “Maddox, why would he hit you with Oblivion Rain?”
Maddox lifted his head and stared at Merrick, who had been exiled to Wasteland City. He could no longer be certain this was all Ralph’s doing.
When Maddox only stared without speaking, Merrick’s voice turned sharp with anger. “Did he hurt you? I’m going to go confront him right now.”

Maddox said, “No, Merrick. Remember how my psionic form was bigger than yours inside the
arena?”
“I do. Did you train with the Cryolotus Wrist Terminal?” Maddox asked.
“I never unlocked that second arena password before I formed my core bond with Elara.” Maddox’s voice went hoarse. “I suspect he’s the one who pushed my psionic form all the way to level 5 moon spirit stone.”
Merrick stumbled backward. He recalled Ralph’s angry remark. “If I had not fought and built power out here, would you and Merrick have enjoyed such high status and resources?”
“What is he really planning?” he asked.
The thought crossed Merrick and Maddox’s minds the second they thought about Ralph’s position.
“No. He wouldn’t do that.” Maddox’s face paled, then he turned and ran off.
“Merrick, why did Maddox run off?” Gillian was completely confused by their coded conversation.
She watched realization dawn across Merrick’s face, as if he had finally solved a long-standing puzzle.
Merrick turned back and pulled Gillian tightly into his arms, squeezing so hard she could barely breathe.
One of them was the public puppet meant to draw everyone’s attention. The other was being groomed in secret.
And Maddox had always been his favorite-the likely candidate to become the next Supreme Leader.
Merrick’s voice wavered between heartbreak and relief. “Gillian, just like you said. I was the disposable pawn my father cast aside.
“Am I the extra one no one wants anymore now that Mom’s gone?”
The muffled words rumbled against her chest, raw with self-doubt. Gillian had never seen him look so vulnerable, like a heartbroken puppy, despite his massive frame.
She murmured, “Merrick…”
Merrick cut in, “It’s fine. I’ve gotten used to it.”

Even so, his arms tightened around her more fiercely.
“I can’t breathe. Can you loosen up a little?” Gillian whispered.
She was really starting to feel like she couldn’t breathe.
