Merrick had wanted a bigger house, but Gillian loved this place too much. Expanding it would work perfectly.
“Sounds great to me.” Gillian and the others all agreed with the plan.
Mabel was delighted with the idea. She opened her wrist terminal right away to discuss construction with her three granddaughters.
The small courtyard buzzed with rare excitement.
Maddox stayed quiet the whole time. Merrick shot him a look and nodded toward the backyard.
The two men walked outside side by side.
“When will you head back to Capital Planet?” Merrick asked.
After everything they had been through, the two could finally talk calmly.
“All business here is wrapped up. I plan to leave in two days.” A faint, strained smile tugged across Maddox’s rigid face.
He knew critical matters were waiting for him on Capital Planet, so he could not linger here.
Merrick nodded thoughtfully, then shifted the subject abruptly. “What about Elara? Will you take her with you?”
A soft smile appeared on Maddox’s lips. He turned and looked Merrick straight in the eye. “Of course I will. I kept my promise to her, and she agreed to return to Capital Planet with me.”
His tone was firm and decisive. He had no second thoughts about bringing her along.
Merrick paused for a moment before speaking again, “Maddox, do you love her?”
The question caught Maddox off guard, though it was not something he had considered.
He quickly regained his composure. “Love might not be the right word. Regardless, I will bring her back with me.”
Merrick said, “All I am asking is whether you love her. You know her status. Life will be harsh for her among the powerful noble families on Capital Planet. If you truly cherish her and protect her with all you have, she will be safe under your care.”

“Did Elara send you to ask me this?” Maddox frowned. If that were true, her behavior made him feel pressured.
This was a private matter between the two of them, and no one else had the right to interfere.
Merrick cut him off before he could snap back with criticism, “No, she had no idea I would bring this up.”
He paused and continued earnestly, “Elara has served as my subordinate for six years, and she is Gillian’s sister. I sincerely hope the two of you can build a happy life together.”
Merrick’s voice was unusually sincere.
Maddox fell silent. He slowly lifted his head and stared at the bright full moon hanging in the night sky. “I’m sorry, Merrick. I truly cannot answer that question.”
His voice was low, heavy with helplessness and inner conflict.
Moonlight poured down over him, yet he felt a cold chill creep over his skin.
He could not explain why, but the moon looked unusually cold tonight.
Merrick understood Maddox’s stubborn nature. No one could force an answer out of him if he refused to speak.
Still, he could not stand by and watch Elara suffer once they reached Capital Planet. If Elara was miserable, Gillian would grieve alongside her, and he could not bear to see Gillian hurting every single day.
He said, “Maddox, if you won’t give her a clear answer, Gillian will never let her sister leave. She needs your promise that you will take good care of Elara before she lets you take her away.”
The yard fell completely silent.
Gillian had been waiting around the corner, and she stepped out looking irritated, with Elara in tow. Elara only wore an amused expression, as if she were just playing along with Gillian’s little game.
When Merrick saw Gillian approaching, he stepped aside to make room.
Maddox turned his head and caught sight of Elara standing bathed in moonlight. Her expression stayed perfectly calm.
Gillian lifted Elara’s hand and faced Maddox. “If you cannot guarantee her happiness, you
