Maddox froze.

She recognized me? She must hate me after the uproar when I came to meet her last time.

“Are you one of Merrick’s Sovereign Guard?” Mabel smiled warmly and nodded at his bio- armor emblazoned with the Sovereign Guard crest.

Maddox said nothing. He did not know what to say.

Mabel continued, “Come inside and run an errand for me. Merrick and Gillian will be back soon. Please deliver these things to them.”

Tormented by guilt over what had happened to Merrick, Maddox silently followed Mabel.

They had only walked a short distance when he noticed Mabel falling behind, struggling to haul a metal crate. At this pace, they would never reach the house.

Maddox stepped forward and took the crate from her hands. “Why are you out buying groceries so early? Where is your grip-buggy? Commander Cole wouldn’t be so stingy.”

The sky was barely light, long before dawn. He had wandered this way by chance, intending to visit the Allheal Apothecary and the Skyfang Road.

Mabel paused at his voice. “Merrick is very generous. I just didn’t want to trouble base housing is perfectly safe. A short walk does me good.”

Seeing that he was determined to help, she let go of the crate.

anyone. The

Maddox hefted the crate and walked ahead.

Mabel watched his back and slowly confirmed who he was.

Elara had told her she would soon travel back to Capital Planet with Maddox. Her worried expression softened into a kindly smile.

He looks troubled.

Did he and Elara quarrel?

Mabel said, “Thank you, young man. My primal core shattered years ago. I walk to stay active and live a little longer.”

Since he would not admit his identity, Mabel did not press him. She quickened her pace and followed him toward the house.

“You will live a long life.” Maddox was shocked to hear she had no primal core. Without one, surviving in this heavily polluted zone was nearly impossible.

Mabel smiled, “Merrick and Gillian have done something wonderful. I don’t understand all the high-level politics. I only know our land will thrive without the taint.”

“You are right. The taint has to end.” Maddox nodded in agreement.

Mabel said, “Then I can stay alive long enough to watch my granddaughters marry, have children, and live happily.”

Maddox stated, “You will.”

As the two talked, Mabel gradually caught up with him. Maddox kept his pace steady, always maintaining the same distance so she could keep up.

The short walk passed quickly.

The two-story villa had been renovated and expanded.

Maddox stepped into the courtyard and saw lush green plants growing everywhere, a rare sight in barren Wasteland City.

“Did

you plant all these?” he asked.

Mabel pointed proudly at the vegetable beds. “Merrick and Gillian sowed these turnip seeds. They are nearly full-grown and will ripen in another month or two. You must come back and share the harvest.”

Maddox said, “I will, if I can.”

Mabel smiled, “Bring Elara with you. There will be more than enough food.”

“You knew who I was all along?” Maddox was surprised by her sharp eye.

Mabel said, “How could I fail to recognize my own family? I knew it was you the moment you spoke. Wait here while I fetch the packages.”

She took the groceries and headed for the kitchen.

Maddox sat quietly in the peaceful courtyard. The calm felt unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting.
