Mabel saw that he stayed quiet, so she popped open the metal food tin. “Why not have a bite right here before you leave?”

“Thank you. I’d love to.” Maddox set the tin down on the stone table.

He picked up a golden silk pastry and took one small bite. The rich flavor instantly won him

over.

“Is it good?” Mabel leaned forward anxiously, worried he might not like her cooking.

Maddox smiled, “I truly envy Gillian growing up with you. This pastry is wonderful.”

“As long as you enjoy it. I have plenty more work to do. The whole family is coming for dinner today, and I need to get these groceries ready.” She did not linger to watch him eat. She turned and headed into the kitchen to prepare the ingredients.

Elara sent a message. “Maddox, have you left yet?”

She could not stop worrying about what trouble he might stir up.

A second later, a photo popped up: a pastry with a bite taken out of it.

Maddox typed, “Your grandma treated me to this meal. She invited me to stay for dinner. I can’t turn down an elder’s kindness, so I’m sticking around.”

Staying for dinner? He was daydreaming.

There was no way Elara would let him hang around her house.

Freya lay pale and exhausted in the treatment room when Elara rushed over to her side. “Freya, let’s head home for dinner.”

Freya stared blankly.
