Gillian squeezed her hand tight and spoke earnestly, “You’re not alone anymore. Don’t be afraid.”
Elara stared at Gillian’s worried face; her heart stirred with emotion.
My little Gillian has truly grown up.
“Do you really have a way?” she asked.
“I can try.” Gillian planned to test the method on herself first. Severing the core bond would be good for both partners’ lives.
Hope lit up Elara’s eyes. If the bond could be broken, she had no wish to follow Maddox to Capital Planet.
Maddox’s jaw twitched.
Are they pretending I am not even there? They whisper so loudly I can hear every word clearly.
“Elara.” Maddox suddenly reached out, took Elara’s hand from Gillian’s grasp, and pulled her firmly into his arms.
Elara pressed against his warm chest. She tried to pull away, but he held her fast.
He said, “I love Elara. I would not tie my life to hers if I did not. Rest easy, Gillian. I will keep Elara safe when we return to Capital Planet.”
Maddox lifted Elara’s chin to meet his gaze. “Isn’t that right, Elara?”
Elara was locked in his deep eyes. The deep shadow in them overlapped with a memory from long ago, freezing her for several heartbeats.
Merrick had never seen Maddox hold a female this close. He would tease him about this scene for a long time.
“Gillian, George needs us. Let’s go.” He pulled Gillian into his arms and made up an excuse to leave.
Gillian hesitated for only a second. When she saw the charged look passing between Elara and Maddox, she nodded quickly.
“What’s going on?” she asked.

Merrick said, “He says we can start building the protective barrier at Wilder Peak. Do you want to come take a look?”
“Wilder Peak? I absolutely want to go. How is the blackstone mining coming along?” Gillian’s face lit up when talking about her precious mountain.
“We’ve pulled out huge quantities. I left a squad stationed there.” Merrick hurried off with Gillian, and the two vanished in an instant.
By the time Elara pushed Maddox away, Gillian and Merrick were already gone.
She frowned. “Where did they go? I’m going to find them.”
Elara turned to leave, but his arms locked tight around her waist.
“You still haven’t answered me.” His warm breath brushed against the nape of her neck, and Elara froze completely.
He continued, “You don’t honestly believe Gillian can break a core bond, do you? Even I have no way to do it.”
His fingers stroked the strands of hair beside her ear, his tone edged with faint mockery.
“That may be true. But Gillian is different. If she says she has a method, I believe she is not just making empty claims.” Elara pressed her palm against his chest, right over his primal core. “Are you going to keep letting this bond tie you down?”
Maddox stroked her soft, silky hair gently. It reminded him of the night they formed their bond-her hair brushing over his chest, stirring restlessness he could not contain.
A quiet tension settled between them.
He said, “Only three Phoenixkin died in the attack, so we cannot keep investigating the lab incident. Per the extra clause in our contract, you have to leave with me.”
Irritation flared inside Elara.
Always the contract.
She forced a smile and looked up at him. “I already said I would go with you. What, are you still uneasy?”
Maddox raised an eyebrow. The moonlight was thick and hazy, and Elara looked breathtakingly beautiful. Before he could speak, she stood on tiptoe and sank her teeth into his
neck.
