He must have noticed my confusion because he quickly explained, "I’m Tom, Dr. Harrison’s assistant."
Realization dawned on me.
No wonder he looked familiar.
"Oh... I’m sorry for not recognizing you. It’s been a while."
"Don’t worry about that, Mrs. Blackwood."
Somehow, hearing someone call me Mrs. Blackwood again after two years felt both familiar and unfamiliar.
Two years ago, just hearing that title irritated me.
But now...
Surprisingly, I felt nothing at all.
It was as though all those emotions had faded away with time.
"Do you want to check on her?" Alexander asked, his voice noticeably softer.
I nodded.
Tom had already gone back inside.
Alexander pushed the door open, and once again I was surprised by what I saw.
The bedroom had been temporarily converted into a medical room.
A comfortable bed stood in the center, while portable medical equipment had replaced most of the usual furnishings. A patient monitor sat beside the bed, with an IV stand, an oxygen cylinder, and a small cabinet stocked with medications nearby.
Tom was already connecting the monitoring equipment to Aimy when I walked in.
It was obvious Alexander had arranged everything beforehand.
I turned and glanced at him.
He must have noticed the surprise on my face because he explained, "These were the conditions the doctor gave for transporting her."
I raised a brow.
"That’s why you had another jet come here overnight with all these supplies?"
He nodded, looking at me as though it was the most natural thing in the world.
I walked over to the bed and sat beside Aimy, watching as Tom connected everything that was necessary.
Most of the equipment would probably go unused, especially since Aimy was relatively stable for now. I figured Alexander had included all of it just in case of an emergency.
He was still the same.
Whenever he cared about someone, he would do everything for them, even if it meant going to extraordinary lengths.
Just like he was doing for Aimy now.
And when he didn’t care...
All that remained was indifference.
It was something I’d realized two years ago when Lilian first returned to the country.
Despite being someone who always kept his private life separate from work, Alexander had abandoned his own principles by terminating another celebrity’s ambassador contract just to give it to Lilian.
Then, after the makeup incident, he had even sponsored an entire television show for her.
Those were sides of him I’d never been fortunate enough to see.
During our two years of marriage, there had been moments when I thought Alexander was being considerate and caring toward me.
But after witnessing how he treated the woman he truly loved...
I realized I had simply been living in my own delusions.
"You should stay here and get some rest with her."
His voice pulled me back to reality.
I looked up.
Tom had already finished and quietly left the room, leaving only Alexander standing by the doorway, watching us with concern lingering in his eyes.
"Alright," I replied softly as I climbed onto the bed beside Aimy.
I’d barely slept last night, constantly checking on Aimy and thinking about my decision to return to Velaridge City after all these years.
Alexander remained standing there for another moment, as though making sure we were comfortable.
Finally, he turned toward the door.
"If you need anything, just call me," he said over his shoulder.
"Mm," I murmured.
My eyelids were already growing heavy.
A second later, I heard the door open...
Then quietly close behind him.
I didn’t know how long I had been asleep.
Somewhere in my dreams, I felt someone gently tugging at my sleeve.
"Mummy..."
My eyes flew open.
I sat up immediately and found Aimy staring at me from the bed.
"Baby, what happened?" I asked softly, brushing a few strands of hair away from her face.
She lifted her free hand weakly and pointed at the IV taped to the back of her hand.
"Take it off... please."
A sharp ache spread through my chest.
I leaned closer and gently held her little hand.
"I’m sorry, sweetheart, but we can’t take it off yet."
I glanced at the IV bag.
There wasn’t much medicine left.
"Just be a little more patient, okay? It’s almost finished."
Aimy pouted, her eyes instantly filling with tears.
"It hurts..."
My heart clenched.
"I see. Thank you."
After she left, I realized I must have slept for quite a while.
The journey between the two cities usually took nearly ten hours.
I fed Aimy first before quietly eating my own meal.
Not long afterward, Tom returned and finally removed the IV.
The moment the needle was gone, Aimy’s face brightened with obvious relief.
Unable to sleep again, I simply held her close as countless thoughts filled my mind.
We were less than an hour away now.
Less than an hour away from the city that had both made me...
And broken me.
The city where I had met the person who loved me most after my father.
The city that had taken her away from me.
Nana.
I had always known this day would come.
For years, I had tried to prepare myself for returning.
But now that it was finally happening...
All I could think about was her.
I was going back to Velaridge City.
Yet Nana wouldn’t be there to welcome me home.
Every other wound seemed to fade beside that single thought.
Without realizing it, I wrapped my arms more tightly around Aimy.
So much had happened in this city.
So much pain.
So many memories.
But this time...
I wasn’t returning alone.
I had my daughter.
I had a family waiting for me.
For the first time in my life...
I had a place I could truly call home.
No matter what awaited me in Velaridge City...
I wouldn’t let myself fall apart again.
Not anymore.
