Alexander’s POV
After asking the staff to move Alicia’s belongings into the master bedroom, I returned to my study to finish a few pending matters.
Earlier at the company, Sebastian Newton had come to see me.
At first, I thought he had come to plead for Karen.
Instead, he spent the entire meeting trying to convince me that he knew nothing about what his daughter had done.
When I told him the police had already confirmed he wasn’t involved, the relief on his face was almost immediate. He even apologized on Karen’s behalf before leaving.
People often described Sebastian Newton as a selfish man.
Today, I finally understood why.
His own daughter had been arrested, yet the only thing he seemed concerned about was clearing his own name.
Either way, there was nothing I could have done.
Karen had committed a crime.
Whether the victim had been my daughter or someone else’s...
she still had to answer for it.
Just then, my phone vibrated across the desk.
Herbert.
I picked up immediately.
"Uncle Herbert."
"Alexander."
After exchanging a few brief greetings, the conversation fell into a short silence.
Then his voice became more serious.
"I spoke to Alicia earlier."
I already knew what the call was about.
"She told me the two of you have decided to give your marriage another chance."
A faint smile touched my lips.
"So... she already told you."
"She did."
There was a pause before he continued.
"And to be honest..."
"I wasn’t expecting that answer."
I remained silent.
"I’ve watched that girl spend the last two years trying to convince everyone she was fine."
His voice grew quieter.
"But today..."
"For the first time in a very long time..."
"I heard her sound genuinely happy."
My grip around the phone tightened slightly.
"I’m glad," I said softly.
"I’m really glad she’s happy."
There was another brief silence.
"I don’t know exactly what happened between the two of you."
"But whatever changed..."
"I hope it wasn’t temporary."
"It wasn’t."
I answered without hesitation.
"It won’t happen again."
Herbert sighed quietly.
"You know..."
"I respected you."
"But after everything Alicia went through..."
"I couldn’t trust you with her happiness anymore."
His words didn’t anger me.
If anything...
I felt they were deserved.
"I know."
"I don’t expect you to trust me again overnight."
"I don’t even think I’ve earned that right yet."
"But..."
I paused before continuing.
"I love Alicia."
"And I’ll spend the rest of my life proving that she made the right decision by trusting me again."
The line went quiet.
When Herbert spoke again, his voice had softened slightly.
"I hope you mean every word you just said."
"I do."
"I watched Alicia break once."
"I don’t ever want to see that happen again."
"Neither do I."
I answered immediately.
"I couldn’t protect her before."
"But from now on..."
"I’ll protect her."
"No matter what it costs."
Herbert let out a long breath.
"Good."
"Because Alicia isn’t alone anymore."
"She has us."
"And if you ever become the reason she cries like she did before..."
His voice remained calm.
"...I won’t hesitate to take her back."
"I understand."
"And if I were in your position..."
"I’d probably do the same."
A faint chuckle came from the other end of the line.
For the first time since the call began, the tension eased.
" Though,I’m happy you finally got your family back, Alexander."
He paused.
"Just don’t lose them again."
I glanced toward the study door, unconsciously thinking about Alicia upstairs.
"I won’t."
Not this time.
Not ever again.
Just as I hung up, a knock sounded on the study door.
"Come in."
One of the staff stepped inside.
"Sir, we’ve finished moving Mrs. Blackwood’s belongings into the master bedroom."
I looked up from the documents on my desk.
"Did you inform her?"
"Yes, sir."
"Alright. You may go."
She glanced down at herself with an amused expression.
"I just don’t think they’ll fit me anymore."
My eyes instinctively traveled over her figure.
She had changed over the past two years.
She looked more mature.
More feminine.
Somehow...
Even more beautiful than before.
As if sensing my gaze, she slowly looked up.
Our eyes met.
A teasing smile tugged at my lips.
Almost instantly, a blush spread across her cheeks.
I chuckled softly.
"I’ll have them moved to another section of the house then."
My eyes drifted toward the jewelry cabinet.
After a brief hesitation, I asked,
"What about the jewelry?"
She turned toward the glass cabinet.
Inside were dozens of jewelry boxes that had remained untouched for the past two years.
She quietly opened one of them, lifting the last necklace I gifted her two years ago into her hand.
It was also the first one I had picked out for her myself.
For a moment, she simply looked at it.
Then she carefully placed it back.
"I want to keep them."
I blinked in surprise.
"Are you sure?"
"We can always buy new ones."
She gently shook her head.
"No."
"I still want them."
There wasn’t even the slightest hesitation in her voice.
A smile slowly appeared on my face.
"Alright."
I quietly watched as she turned back to the wardrobe, her gaze sweeping over the rows of dresses once more.
Two years ago, I’d brought all these things here, never knowing if she’d ever step into this room again.
Yet here she was.
Not as an unwilling wife...
But as the woman who had chosen to return.
She turned and caught me staring.
"What?" she asked, her cheeks flushing slightly.
I smiled.
"Nothing."
"I just like seeing you here."
Her smile widened.
"...Then you’d better get used to it."
I stared at her for a moment before pulling her into my arms once more.
This time, she hugged me back without the slightest hesitation.
Somehow...
The room that had felt empty for two years finally felt like home again.
