"That won’t be necessary," she said softly. "I think it’s better if I work here."
I pulled back slightly to look at her.
"You want to return to Blackwood Dominion?"
She nodded.
"Well... that’s where I started, isn’t it?"
"But I don’t want you returning just because of that."
She smiled faintly.
"That’s not the only reason."
She paused before continuing.
"Whitemore Industries belongs to my family, but Blackwood Dominion was there long before that."
"It’s where I built my career... and it’s Nana’s legacy. She trusted me with it."
I studied her quietly.
"What about your family?"
Her eyes softened.
"My family is where you and Aimy are now."
She reached for my hand.
"The family I have in Rosewood Town will always be there."
She smiled gently.
"And I can always visit them."
There wasn’t the slightest hesitation in her eyes.
Only certainty.
Only determination.
I leaned forward and pulled her closer.
"If that’s what you want..."
I kissed the top of her head.
"...then we’ll do just that."
I rested my chin lightly against her hair.
"I love you."
"And remember this, Alicia."
"No matter what decision you make..."
"I’ll always support you."
She smiled warmly.
"Thank you... for everything."
She closed her laptop before placing it on the bedside table.
"Won’t you finish your work?" I asked.
She shook her head.
"No."
She smiled tiredly.
"I’m exhausted."
"Tomorrow is fine."
She switched off the bedside lamp, leaving only the soft glow from the hallway spilling beneath the door.
I settled against the headboard before pulling her gently into my arms.
We stayed like that for a while, enjoying the silence.
"Alexander?"
"Mm?"
She hesitated.
"What did the police say about Aunt Angela?"
My arms tightened around her instinctively.
I remained silent for a moment.
She looked up at me.
"It’s okay if you don’t want to talk about it..."
I gently stroked her hair.
"Karen still refuses to tell the police anything useful."
"We still don’t know whether Aunt Angela had anything to do with the poisoning."
She rested her head against my chest again.
I continued running my fingers through her hair.
"But don’t worry."
"Whatever the truth is..."
"We’ll find it."
"No matter what."
She didn’t answer immediately.
Somehow...
I knew there was something else she wanted to ask.
"You know you can ask me anything, right?" I said softly.
She hesitated before speaking.
"How did you know about what happened at the mansion two years ago?"
"I overheard the staff talking about it."
"Did you hear our conversation?"
I asked and she nodded.
"Only part of it."
"I was passing by to check on the children."
Silence settled between us once again.
Then she finally spoke again.
"You know..."
"I’d already decided to leave before that."
Her voice was quiet.
"I knew that if I stayed..."
"...my child and I might not survive."
My chest tightened.
Images from that time flashed through my mind.
Lucas Summer.
The abandoned warehouse.
The terror of almost losing both of them before I even knew my daughter existed.
Even now, remembering it made my heart clench painfully.
"I just didn’t know where to go..."
"Or how to leave."
I smiled bitterly.
"Without being found by me."
She nodded.
"When Aunt Angela told me she still preferred Lilian..."
"...and that even my child didn’t deserve to be part of the family..."
Her voice faltered.
"I realized how dangerous things had become."
She closed her eyes briefly.
"Then I opened Nana’s box..."
"...and I knew it was time."
She looked up at me.
"Aunt Angela’s words only helped me realize what I already needed to do."
I knew exactly what she was trying to do.
She didn’t want me blaming Aunt Angela for everything.
Velaridge City Police Station
Immediately after learning what had happened to Aimy, Steve traveled to Washington and returned to Velaridge City with Angela.
As soon as they arrived, Angela voluntarily accompanied him to the police station for questioning.
The interrogation lasted for several hours.
Every detail was thoroughly investigated.
In the end, the police confirmed that Angela had indeed been the one who recommended Karen for the position of Alexander’s assistant at Blackwood Dominion.
However...
There was no evidence linking her to Aimy’s poisoning.
Her phone was examined, including her call logs, text messages, and recent communications with Karen.
Nothing suggested that she had known about Karen’s plan or participated in it.
Since there was no concrete evidence against her, the police had no legal grounds to detain her any longer.
After Angela and Steve left, several officers remained discussing the case.
"The Blackwood case really is something else," one officer remarked as he flipped through the investigation file.
"It started as the poisoning of a child, and somehow the father’s own aunt became one of the primary suspects."
"It makes you wonder what kind of family this really is," another officer sighed.
A third officer shook his head.
"I don’t think Miss Angela was involved."
The others looked toward him.
"Our investigation shows that the last conversation between her and Karen took place a few days before the poisoning."
"Doesn’t that make her look even more suspicious?" another officer asked.
He shook his head again.
"Not exactly."
"According to Miss Angela’s statement, Karen became furious after Chairman Blackwood reunited with his wife and daughter."
"She blamed everything on Miss Angela."
"When Miss Angela told her there was nothing more she could do, Karen claimed she’d handle everything herself."
He tapped the call log inside the file.
"After that, Karen stopped answering every one of Miss Angela’s calls."
"The phone records match her statement exactly."
The room fell silent.
Just then, an elderly man walked into the office.
"Good morning, sir," the officer in charge greeted politely.
"Good morning."
The man adjusted his suit.
"My name is Sebastian Newton."
Recognition flashed across the officer’s face.
"I see."
"You must be here to visit Miss Karen."
Ever since Karen had been arrested, Sebastian had never once visited the station. Even the lawyer handling her case had been arranged by her mother.
Naturally, the officer assumed Sebastian had finally come to see his daughter.
To his surprise, Sebastian shook his head.
"No."
"I’m here to speak with you."
The officer looked slightly confused.
"With me?"
Sebastian nodded before glancing around.
"If possible... I’d appreciate a private conversation."
The officer simply nodded.
"This way, please."
A few minutes later, the two men were seated inside the officer’s office....
