Landon sat in the heavy silence for a few more minutes before snatching up his phone and dialing a number.
The call was answered on the second ring.
"Boss."
"I need a background check on someone," he drawled, slouching back into his leather chair.
"Who's the target?"
"Melody Monroe. And I mean every dirty little detail you can find."
The voice on the other end hesitated. "The Monroe heiress? Why are you digging into her?"
"Just do your job and stop asking stupid questions." He chuckled darkly and hung up.
He began drumming his fingers rhythmically against the mahogany desk.
Melody.
She was practically royalty in their ultra-exclusive social circles.
The sole heiress to the Monroe empire, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, completely used to getting whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted it.
After wrapping up a flashy stint overseas, she had returned and effortlessly dominated the elite socialite scene.
But her glittering pedigree wasn't what fascinated him.
He was zeroing in on her solely because she was supposedly Lucian's childhood sweetheart.
Everyone in high society knew the pathetic truth: she was utterly, desperately obsessed with him, and she had never bothered trying to hide it.
Unfortunately for her, the feeling had never been mutual.
And once Lucian had publicly married Seraphina, Melody had instantly been reduced to the punchline of every country club joke.
Whispers of "the resentful socialite" and "pathetic stalker" trailed her everywhere she went.
Landon had heard all the vicious rumors himself.
Yet, the woman he had witnessed outside the VIP club the other night had painted a drastically different picture.
She had been heavily intoxicated, stumbling in her stilettos, but she had kept her spine completely rigid.
With a dead phone and no ride home, she had chosen to stand freezing in the biting wind rather than swallow her pride and beg for help.
That woman had an unbreakable, ferocious core of arrogance.
"Talk about unhinged dedication," he muttered, tossing the dossier back onto his desk.
He sprang to his feet, pacing like a caged predator as his mind spun a brilliant, venomous web.
She was an invaluable asset.
She had unlimited capital, high-level connections, and most importantly, a psychotic obsession with destroying Lucian's marriage.
And toxic obsession was the easiest thing in the world to weaponize.
If he wanted to usurp the empire and take what was rightfully his, she was the perfect pawn to put into play.
Their little encounter outside the club had successfully broken the ice.
All he had to do now was orchestrate a few 'accidental' run-ins, and he would have her eating out of the palm of his hand.
He wasn't like his idiotic mother, desperately flailing around and screaming her intentions for the entire world to see.
That was amateur hour.
A true hunter never let their prey see the barrel of the gun until it was too late.
