My Unborn Baby Chose My Husband for Me novel Chapter 40

Samuel had poured an incredible amount of time and money into greasing the right palms, and the quality of The Simmons Group's products was renowned throughout the industry.

Christian kept incredibly close tabs on corporate developments like this, so he didn't even need to double-check. "Yes, Boss. Do you want to step in and secure the contract for them?"

After all, Ms. Simmons belonged to that family.

It made perfect sense for the Boss to pull some strings for his father-in-law.

The thing was, Lucian was notoriously ruthless about keeping his personal life separate from business. He never allowed backdoor dealings.

It seemed he was well and truly smitten with his wife if he was willing to break his own golden rule for her.

"No," Lucian flatly denied the assumption.

Christian paused, momentarily thrown off balance.

"I want The Simmons Group cut from the bidding entirely."

"Wait..." Christian was genuinely confused. "Given your wife's ties to the family, is that really a good idea?"

Lucian's dark eyes turned lethal. "My wife was abused by her family today. I'm making them bleed for it. What part of that isn't a good idea?"

Christian hung up the phone, staring blankly at the screen for several seconds.

He had worked under Lucian for five years, and this was the first time he had ever received an order like this.

He wasn't helping them. He was slaughtering them.

And he was doing it to his own wife's family.

So, they had crossed his wife.

The Simmons family were absolute fools.

Of all the people to piss off, they had to provoke the devil himself.

Christian massaged his temples. Knowing better than to ask further questions, he immediately got to work.

The Simmons Group had poured a massive amount of capital and manpower into preparing for The Starlight Grand bid. Samuel had personally exhausted every connection he had, entirely convinced the contract was his.

If they were unceremoniously disqualified at this critical stage...

Christian suppressed a shudder.

He knew better than anyone just how devastatingly ruthless Lucian could be.

...

Hanging up the phone, Lucian stood on the balcony, lighting a cigarette and taking a long drag.

...

The Simmons Estate.

Even after Seraphina left, the atmosphere in the living room remained suffocating.

Samuel sat aggressively on the sofa, his face flushed with anger, his fingers rapidly drumming against the armrest.

The moment his hand had connected with her cheek, he had felt a surge of vindictive power.

But now that the adrenaline had faded, a heavy, sick weight settled in his gut.

"Dad, please don't be mad." Sienna walked over with a cup of tea, playing the dutiful daughter. "Sera... is just being stubborn. Once she cools off, she'll realize you were just looking out for her."

Samuel scoffed darkly. "Realize it? If she had any sense at all, she wouldn't have spewed that toxic garbage at me!"

"Alright, alright," Zelda interjected smoothly, her voice soft and persuasive. "Sienna is right. Sera has always been incredibly rebellious. The more you push, the more she fights back. We can't rush this share transfer. We have to coax her."

"Coax her? She's married into the Langford family now. She thinks she's untouchable. You think she's ever going to listen to me again?"
