Seraphina had suspected this was more than an accident, but hearing it confirmed still made her stomach drop.
Who was it?
Sienna? Zelda? Or Sebastian?
No, as possessive as Sebastian was, he wasn't this underhanded.
If he wanted something, he took it openly; he didn't rely on cheap, dirty tricks like this.
That left Sienna and Zelda.
Both of them were at the gala tonight.
The waitress who "accidentally" spilled the wine was almost certainly on their payroll.
"Who hired you?" Seraphina demanded, stalling for time.
Lucian had to have noticed her absence by now, right?
During the gala, his eyes had constantly sought her out.
Knowing she was pregnant and unaccustomed to such events, he had kept a close watch on her all evening.
If he realized she was missing and asked the other guests, he would figure it out soon enough.
She just needed to buy a few more minutes.
Truthfully, a wave of regret washed over her.
She had been too reckless.
She knew it was a trap, yet she had walked right into it anyway.
If anything happened to Little Bean, she would never forgive herself.
Zane chuckled darkly. "Who hired me? You don't need to worry about that. All you need to know is that after tonight, Lucian Langford won't want you anymore."
"You'd better leave now," Seraphina's voice was glacial. "My husband will find me any minute. You know what happens to people who cross Lucian Langford."
The older man's expression faltered.
Of course he knew.
No one in their right mind crossed Lucian Langford.
But—
"You bitch! You dared hit me?" His face twisted into a grotesque mask of rage.
Taking advantage of his distraction, Seraphina bolted for the door.
But Zane was surprisingly fast, his uninjured hand snatching her wrist in a vice grip.
"Trying to run?" He yanked her hard, throwing Seraphina entirely off balance.
She pitched sideways, instinctively curling up to shield her stomach.
Just as she braced for the harsh impact with the floor—
*Crash!*
The solid wood door was kicked wide open.
Lucian stood in the threshold, looking like the grim reaper himself.
His murderous gaze swept the room, landing on the sleazy man clutching Seraphina's wrist. The fire in his eyes erupted into a raging inferno.
"Let her go," Lucian commanded, his voice laced with pure lethal intent.
