Julian Zeller pushed the door open and walked in.
Lucian shot him a mild glance. "Stop snooping. Once she gets back, get the hell out."
"Whoa, so protective. Is this your new wife? Don't tell me you actually caught feelings? Aren't you worried she's just climbing into your bed for the money?" Julian warned.
After all, this woman didn't exactly have a stellar reputation.
She had just called off her wedding, only to immediately latch onto Lucian.
At that exact moment, Seraphina was returning from the restroom and caught the sound of an unfamiliar voice drifting from the private dining room.
Her hand paused on the doorknob.
It sounded like they were talking about her.
Seraphina kept her hand hovering over the handle, not pushing it open just yet.
Julian's voice carried through the gap. "Lucian, I'm not trying to stir up trouble. But Seraphina Simmons just ditched Sebastian Sullivan to marry you, and half the city is waiting for the punchline. Don't be a fool and let her play you."
Seraphina lowered her gaze, her fingers tightening slightly.
She recognized that voice.
It was Julian Zeller, Lucian's best friend and a notorious playboy in their elite circle.
"Are you done?" Lucian's voice was flat, devoid of any discernible emotion.
"I'm looking out for you! Look at your status, and look at hers. If you just wanted a fling, fine, but the way you're acting, it looks like you're actually taking this seriously," Julian pointed out.
"Who said it was just a fling?" Lucian's tone turned icy. "Julian, since when is my personal life any of your business?"
Julian froze. "Lucian, I didn't mean it like that—"
Lucian cut him off sharply. "Then what did you mean? She is my wife. If I don't protect her, am I supposed to just sit back and let others walk all over her?"
The room fell dead silent.
Standing out in the hallway, a suffocating wave of complex emotions washed over Seraphina.
She had fully expected Lucian to stay quiet, or at least deny it.
Julian raised an eyebrow, genuinely surprised.
He had fully expected her to burst into tears or fly off the handle in a fit of humiliation.
He never imagined she'd be this composed.
"Good thing you didn't hear it." Julian smiled. "Have a seat, don't just stand there."
Seraphina walked over and took her seat. Lucian poured her a glass of room-temperature water, his tone completely natural. "Was there a line at the restroom?"
"Not really. I was just admiring the view for a bit. It's beautiful out there," Seraphina offered a white lie.
Julian watched Lucian pour water for Seraphina, a flash of utter shock in his eyes.
He had known Lucian since they were kids, and he had never, ever seen him serve a woman a drink.
In the past, wasn't every woman practically begging for the chance to wait on Lucian hand and foot?
But none of them had even been allowed to get close.
