Thaddeus locked eyes with Phoenix, trying to detect even the slightest hint of panic in her gaze.
However, all he saw was firmness, confidence, and a deeply hidden sharpness.
In a trance, this young woman actually reminded him of the figure that had once shaken the entire elite circle.
"Fine. I will give you your hour."
Thaddeus withdrew his gaze, his voice as cold and heavy as iron.
"Dad." Marcus cried out in shock, only to be pinned in place by Thaddeus's fierce glare.
"But if he isn't awake in an hour, all of you will pay with your lives."
The bet was sealed.
Marcus's face darkened, his venomous gaze tightly coiled around Phoenix and her friends.
An hour wasn't long, but it wasn't short either—it was enough time for countless uncontrollable variables to arise.
Taking advantage of this brief standoff, Cyrus discreetly pulled Phoenix and Meredith into a shadowy corner.
"What is it?" Phoenix noticed Cyrus's grave expression and asked softly, "Did something change with his condition?"
Cyrus lowered the brim of his baseball cap, hiding the sharp glint in his eyes, and spoke rapidly. "While applying the needles just now, I confirmed my previous suspicion. He isn't sick; he was poisoned."
"Poisoned?" Meredith's face turned deathly pale, her voice trembling. "Cyrus, how could Grandpa have been poisoned?"
Cyrus sneered, shooting a blade-like glance at Marcus, who was standing not far away. "You'll have to ask your dear brother about that. After all, he said himself that he's been solely handling all of Gideon's meals and daily care for years."
"It's a slow-acting poison. Taking it normally shows no symptoms, but once the toxins build up over a long period, it erupts and leaves a person completely drained of life, just like this."
Listening to Cyrus's analysis, Meredith felt a chill run down her spine, the coldness shooting straight to the top of her head.
"If he was the one who poisoned him, why go through all the trouble of making me give up a kidney?"
"Merry." Phoenix frowned deeply, gripping her freezing hands and speaking in a grave tone. "I'm afraid he wanted both you and your grandfather to die together on that operating table."
Meredith jerked her head up, staring at Phoenix in horror.
"Cyrus just confirmed his diagnosis. Grandpa was poisoned."
"What?" Milo's face changed drastically. "Are you sure?"
"Cyrus is a master healer, he's never wrong." Meredith bit her lower lip. Her voice was incredibly low, but every word carried heavy weight. "And the one who poisoned him is most likely... Marcus."
At this conclusion, Milo's pupils constricted sharply, yet he didn't argue. Who else could it be but Marcus, who controlled absolutely everything?
"No wonder he absolutely refused to let my people examine him. He had a guilty conscience and was afraid of being exposed." Milo suddenly realized the truth. The so-called expert team was nothing more than a cover-up for his crimes.
"What do you want me to do?" Milo, sensing Meredith's intentions, asked straightforwardly.
"This kind of poison needs to be administered over a long time, so Marcus definitely has a stash left. I need you to rush back to the estate right now and search for that poison." Meredith squeezed Milo's hand tightly. "Milo, right here... you're the only one I can trust."
"Meredith, I understand." Milo nodded heavily, anger burning in his eyes. "Rather than waiting here doing nothing, I might as well dig out the evidence. Don't worry, I will definitely get justice for you and Grandpa."
"Thank you."
