Watching the approaching shadow in the rearview mirror, Phoenix chuckled.
"Buddy, do you have some sort of misunderstanding about The Veneno's performance specs?"
Vroom!
The engine roared like an awakening beast.
With a light tap of Phoenix's foot, this terrifying steel monster exploded into action, turning into a silver bolt of lightning that tore down the straight street.
Now, the person in the trailing car finally understood why Phoenix had turned down this street—it was a massively long straightaway, enough to let The Veneno display a speed that brought utter despair.
"Damn it!! How am I supposed to keep up with that?!"
Watching his target instantly become a small dot in the distance, the burly man inside furiously slammed his hand against the steering wheel and cursed as he dialed his employer's number.
"Miss, you didn't tell me she was driving a performance monster like this! I can't even see her taillights in my crappy sedan, how am I supposed to catch her?!"
"Double the pay!!"
Those simple words acted like a stimulant, instantly lighting up the burly man's greedy eyes.
"Deal. I will definitely hunt that woman down for you today."
Hanging up, the man took a deep breath and floored the accelerator. The engine revved, and the car chased after her like a wild beast.
However, this hunt came to a screeching halt just as it began.
A pitch-black Rolls-Royce cut in like a phantom, aggressively forcing the burly man's car to stop by the side of the road.
"You got a death wish?!" The man leaned on his horn in a blazing fury. He shoved his door open, ready to march over and give them a piece of his mind.
But the other car's door suddenly swung open. A hand reached out and, without a word, dragged him bodily into the back seat.
The door slammed shut.
Just as the man was about to lash out, his gaze met a pair of bone-chilling eyes.
In that split second, it felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head. All his arrogance instantly froze, and even his thoughts of resistance were completely crushed.
"Who sent you?" Pierce's voice was low and cold, wrapped in a tangible, murderous aura.
"M-Mr. Sterling?" The burly man recognized his face, and cold sweat instantly poured down his skin. He squeezed out a smile uglier than a cry. "What do you mean? I don't understand, I was just driving normally..."
Pierce didn't waste time with words. His fingers suddenly tightened, viciously gripping the man's throat. "My patience is limited. Spit out everything you know!!"
As the sensation of suffocation hit, the man completely panicked.
The burly man shrank into the corner, probing cautiously. "Mr. Sterling, now that you know who the mastermind is... can I go? I swear, I won't dare lay a finger on that woman ever again!"
Pierce didn't even spare him a glance, coldly ordering the driver's seat. "Yancy, reroute. Head to Riverside One."
Meanwhile, on a road elsewhere.
Phoenix glanced in her rearview mirror and noticed the tailing car was long gone. She curled her lips, suddenly feeling bored. "How dull. I thought they could play with me for a bit, but they couldn't even keep up with my shadow."
Returning to Starlight Heights, the apartment was empty, devoid of that familiar silhouette.
She frowned and dialed Pierce's number. "Mr. Sterling, are you leaving me to sleep in an empty bed tonight?"
"I have an urgent matter to handle. I'll be back late," Pierce's voice traveled through the line. It was still deep, but it carried a hint of warmth. "There's food prepared in the fridge. Just heat it up and you can eat."
Phoenix walked into the kitchen and pulled open the fridge door. Sure enough, dishes neatly wrapped in plastic were laid out, ready to be popped into the microwave.
"You are quite the househusband, Mr. Sterling." Phoenix's lips curled up, a smile floating in her eyes. "Take your time. I'll eat first."
Hanging up, she placed the food in the microwave.
Taking advantage of the time it took to heat up, Phoenix booted up her laptop.
Her slender fingers flew across the keyboard as she skillfully logged into the dark web. She wanted to see exactly which blind fool had recently put a bounty on her life.
