Phoebe withdrew her gaze and finally focused on the man in the wheelchair in the corner.
Barrett Lowery, the crippled heir of the Lowery family.
The man was emaciated, his eyes sunken, and his gaze as vicious as a viper lurking in the shadows, radiating an uncomfortable, gloomy aura.
"Mr. Lowery, do you mind if I sit next to you?" Phoebe walked over, her voice crisp and demure.
Any ordinary man would feel protective seeing her delicate posture. But Barrett merely twitched his lips, revealing a chilling, creepy sneer.
"So you're the second young lady of the Prescott family, my fiancée?" Barrett's cloudy eyes scanned Phoebe, assessing her like a cheap commodity. "Tsk, tsk. So average. I thought the Prescott heiress would be stunning, but you're just... mediocre."
Phoebe's face paled slightly, resentment boiling in her chest. How dare this cripple look down on her?
But she maintained a flawless smile on her face. "Mr. Lowery, our engagement is merely a business arrangement. If I displease you so much, you are perfectly welcome to call off the wedding."
"Call it off?" Barrett shook his head, his eyes full of mockery. "Why would I do that? This union is mutually beneficial. Besides, even though you're a bit ugly, as long as you can be a vessel to breed and carry on my family line, you'll do."
Phoebe's pupils constricted, and she tightly clenched her hands hidden in her sleeves.
That bastard! Not only did he insult her looks, but he also treated her like a mere breeding vessel!
"Didn't you want to sit next to me?" Barrett watched her carefully constructed mask crack, seemingly taking immense pleasure in it. "Come on, sit."
Phoebe took a deep breath, forced down her disgust, and squeezed out a stiff smile as she sat down beside him.
She had intended to use this opportunity to display intimacy with Barrett, just to show Vanessa her "value." Even though the Lowery family's power was average, they were still wealthy elites, and this alliance was vital to the Prescotts.
But who knew Barrett was a twisted psycho? Marrying someone like him would eventually drive her insane.
"Fiancée, I want some grapes. Feed me, will you?" Barrett suddenly spoke, his voice eerie. "You know my legs don't work. I can't reach them."
Phoebe's expression shifted multiple times. She quickly glanced at Vanessa and Mrs. Lowery in the distance. For the sake of the bigger picture, she gritted her teeth, plucked a grape from the fruit platter, and offered it to his lips.
Barrett stared at her. An unsettling smirk curled on his lips as he suddenly engulfed her fingers in his mouth and bit down hard.
"Ah!"
