Seeing the unconcealed anxiety and anger on her face, Pierce didn't feel annoyed. Instead, a strange sense of satisfaction bloomed in his chest.
“I won't die.” He gave her a weak smile. “I'm the Reaper, remember? Death is too afraid to collect me.”
“Shut up!” Phoenix glared at him fiercely. “This is no time to act tough.”
She quickly got out, yanked the passenger door open, and carefully helped Pierce step out of the car.
The interior was far too cramped to properly treat a wound like this.
Pierce leaned against the side of the car, tilting his head back to look at her.
The moonlight poured over her like silver water.
He studied her tightly pursed lips, the bright worry shining in her eyes, and the stray locks of hair framing her face. Standing there in the blood-scented night, she looked incredibly, breathtakingly alive.
Although they had shared a few close encounters before, in Pierce's eyes, she had never looked as beautiful as she did right now.
Thankfully, the Lamborghini was fully equipped, and she found a first-aid kit in the trunk.
If it hadn't been for that kit, dealing with the arrow wound would have been a genuine nightmare.
Phoenix kept her eyes lowered, expertly cleaning the wound, though her fingers betrayed a subtle tremor.
The wound was gruesome, the flesh torn and mangled—a sight that made her chest tighten. With Pierce's reflexes, he should have easily dodged the attack, no matter how dense the volley of arrows had been.
Unless...
A sudden realization struck her like lightning.
When she was running toward the car door, her back had been completely exposed, yet the expected shower of arrows had never hit her.
Phoenix's gaze snapped up, crashing straight into Pierce's slightly hazy, deep eyes.
He had done it to protect her.
This man had used his own body as a shield to block the arrow meant for her.
“What are you staring at? Do I have something on my face?” Phoenix forced down the sudden flutter in her chest, feigning annoyance.
Pierce snapped out of his daze, his eyes shifting uncomfortably toward the pitch-black road. “I wasn't looking at you. I was checking for pursuers.”
“Oh, is that right?” Phoenix's lips twitched upward, but her hands didn't stop as she abruptly yanked the bandage tight.
“Ah—” Pierce hissed, his brows knitting tightly in pain as he glared at her. “Are you trying to murder your husband?”
“Not at all. You have to tie it tight to stop the bleeding. It's basic first aid.” Phoenix shrugged with a look of perfect innocence, though a hint of mischief danced in her eyes.
“I think you did that on purpose.” Pierce took a deep breath, fighting through the sharp, radiating pain. His voice sounded weak. “I'm a patient right now. Can't you be a little gentler?”
