“Useless!” Alistair sneered, his gaze cutting like a knife. “You're her mother, and you don't even know where your own daughter is? What kind of matriarch of the Prescott family are you?”
Vanessa's eyes filled with terrified tears, but she didn't dare argue.
“Alistair, did you forget? That ungrateful wolf severed all ties with us ages ago!” Julian couldn't hold back anymore, his voice trembling with rage. “Now that she's latched onto Pierce, she thinks she's untouchable! She even manipulated him into destroying our company and forced my father... She's an absolute traitor!”
“He's right, Alistair.” Phoebe's eyes reddened as she put on her best impression of a fragile, helpless victim. “Dad was just trying to teach her a lesson, to remind her not to bite the hand that feeds her. Who knew... who knew it would backfire and trigger Pierce's wrath?”
“Shut your mouth!”
Alistair snapped his head toward her, his hawk-like eyes drilling into Phoebe. “This is the Prescott family's inner council. Since when does a useless brat like you have the right to speak?”
Phoebe's face drained of color, and she froze in sheer terror.
Being called “useless” hit her like a physical slap, completely shattering her pride.
Back when she was valuable, she was his “precious granddaughter.” Now that Phoenix had permanently crushed her underfoot, in this old man's eyes, her very existence was a mistake.
“Alistair...” Warren violently jerked his head up, his bloodshot eyes burning with desperation. “I miscalculated this time, I admit it! But if we don't get rid of Phoenix, or at least bring her to heel, it's only a matter of time before she rips the CEO title right out of my hands! And when she does, she'll drag the entire family down with her!”
Alistair's eyes narrowed into slits as his thumb rubbed against the dragon head of his cane, clearly weighing the pros and cons.
Phoenix was far too sharp right now. Yes, she was incredibly capable, but if that blade couldn't be wielded by the Prescott family and was instead pointed at their own throats, she absolutely had to go.
“You're overreacting, Warren. I think Phoenix is a wonderful girl.”
A slow, deliberate sigh suddenly cut through the heavy silence.
Everyone turned to look. The voice belonged to Ethan Prescott.
“Ethan, what the hell is that supposed to mean?” Warren glared at him. “Phoenix is trying to rip our family apart by the roots, and you're defending that traitor?”
Ethan shook his head, a mocking smile playing on his lips. “Warren, have some decency. If you two had just shown that girl a shred of kindness as her parents, do you honestly think she would have pushed you this far? If you had given her even a tenth of the love you showered on your adopted daughter, the Prescott family would be riding Pierce's coattails to the top of the world right now. Instead, you're hacking off pieces of your own flesh just to beg for mercy.”
His words slammed into Vanessa and Julian's chests like a sledgehammer.
Vanessa's expression went blank, her eyes losing focus.
