Phoenix stumbled slightly as she was dragged along, completely bewildered. The man had a smile on his face, but why did it feel like he was radiating a low-pressure storm? Who had provoked this powerhouse?
Had the old man said something insulting?
No, that couldn't be it. Alistair was a thousand-year-old fox, far too shrewd to offend Pierce easily. At most, they were just verbally sparring.
"Caleb, let's keep in touch!" Phoenix made sure to turn around and call out before they walked out the door.
"Sure."
Before Caleb could finish his sentence, Pierce's pace noticeably quickened, as if a monster were chasing them, eager to drag her away from the drama.
Inside the main hall.
Caleb watched the two leave. The previously gloomy, dead look in his eyes had sparked with a firm glimmer of hope, bringing a trace of vibrant life to his perpetually pale face.
"Caleb, are you... smiling?"
Ethan walked over from out of nowhere, staring at his son in utter shock.
Caleb froze briefly. He turned to look at his father, the faint smile on his lips vanishing instantly. "You must have seen wrong, Dad."
Ethan shook his head, his tone absolute. "For years, your happiness has been the only thing I've cared about. I wouldn't miss even the slightest change in your expression."
He took a few steps closer and asked eagerly, "What did Phoenix say to you? Why did she cause such a drastic change in you?"
Caleb cautiously scanned their surroundings, then shot Ethan a meaningful look.
The father and son wordlessly moved to a secluded corner.
Only after confirming no one was eavesdropping did Caleb lower his voice, every word laced with ice. "Dad, the car crash all those years ago wasn't an accident."
"What?!" Ethan's face drained of color. After the shock faded, fury erupted in his eyes. "Caleb, do you have solid proof?"
"Yes." Caleb nodded, his gaze deep and filled with bone-deep hatred. "The crash was executed flawlessly, leaving no obvious traces. But don't you think the timing was far too coincidental?"
"Right on the eve of Grandfather announcing the heir, I met with a sudden disaster and became a cripple."
Ethan's expression darkened like a stormy sky. Now that his son pointed it out, the crash really did have an undeniably terrifying aura of suspicion around it.
"Are you saying... the one who did it was Warren?"
