"Phoenix requested a special approval directly from Alistair," Sloane explained with a bright, innocent smile. "She is really so kind. She knew we wanted to make something of ourselves, so she not only gave us the opportunity but specifically arranged positions for us."

"We'll both work really hard, Uncle Warren. We promise we won't embarrass the family," Yvette added, her face full of naive anticipation.

Yet, every word felt like a sharp, mocking dagger to Warren.

"So... what departments were you assigned to?" Warren asked darkly, an ominous feeling settling in his chest.

"I'm an assistant director in the Finance Department, and Sloane is a recruiting manager in the HR Department," Yvette answered honestly.
