Pierce looked Yancy dead in the eye and shook his head. "Do you think dying for your boss makes you a hero?"
Yancy froze, then frantically tried to explain. "Boss, that's not what I meant. It's just... one person dying is better than two. Me acting as a decoy gives you the best chance to escape."
"Enough." Pierce gripped Yancy's shoulder, his tone leaving absolutely no room for argument. "Letting you die so I can run only proves that I'm a worthless boss."
"Yancy, I know how loyal you are."
"But you don't need to throw your life away to prove it."
Yancy's eyes turned red. "Out of all the men back then, you chose me. My life has been yours since that day!"
"Shut up."
Crash!
The rotting door was violently kicked off its hinges, slamming into the ground and kicking up a thick cloud of dust.
Yancy instantly stepped in front of Pierce. "Who's there?"
Several burly men flooded through the open doorway, completely blocking any chance of escape.
"Well, well, well, Boss. You really made us work for it!" The bald leader, Boris Bragg, rubbed his head, glaring at Pierce and Yancy with predatory eyes. "I never thought you'd actually escape through the river."
"Managing to swim upstream and hide out here... I gotta say, I respect that."
"But unfortunately, our employer wants you dead, so..."
He waved his hand, and his men drew their machetes, radiating pure murderous intent.
"Whatever your boss is paying you, I'll double it." Pierce narrowed his eyes, remaining perfectly calm despite the lethal threat. "You live on the edge for a paycheck. I can give you infinitely more. Why turn it down?"
Boris burst into laughter, his gaze suddenly turning vicious. "Boss, we do dirty work, and reputation is everything. If we let our targets buy their way out, who the hell would ever hire us again?"
"Money is great, sure. But I prefer a steady stream of income over a quick buck."
The moment the words left his mouth, Pierce launched himself forward, driving a brutal punch straight toward Boris's face.
Boris's eyes widened in sheer terror. He couldn't believe a man who looked half-dead possessed such explosive, terrifying power.
A seasoned fighter, Boris instantly stepped back and threw a counter-punch to intercept the strike.
Bang.
The impact sent a violent tremor up Boris's arm, forcing him to stumble back several paces.
