Alistair's face paled drastically as he stared at his rebellious daughter in total disbelief.
Eleanor had left the family years ago; she shouldn't have ever crossed paths with Phoenix since her return. Yet, judging by her tone, not only had they met, but they had already formed some sort of alliance.
Eleanor hadn't just returned to watch the show; she had come to issue a blatant threat.
"You've been arrogant your entire life, always thinking you were ten steps ahead," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with distant mockery. "But today, you're finally going to pay a devastating price for that arrogance."
...
On the stage, bathed in the glaring spotlight.
Phoenix suddenly raised her hand toward the audience, holding up a single finger.
The crowd exchanged bewildered glances, completely thrown off.
"Everyone..." Her voice carried through the microphone, echoing across the entire plaza—cool, melodic, yet laced with an undeniable edge. "Didn't you want the truth behind the car crash from four years ago? Today, I will give you that truth."
As her words settled over the crowd, she slowly lowered her arm, her index finger snapping out to point directly at the shadowy corner of the stage where Phoebe was hiding.
"The real culprit behind that crash... was her—Phoebe Prescott."
Phoebe's face drained of color, her eyes widening in shock.
Was this lunatic seriously trying to throw the blame on her in front of everyone?
But given the overwhelming tide of public hatred, such a baseless accusation would just look like a desperate joke. Phoebe steadied her nerves, confident that Phoenix couldn't possibly turn the tables. Slipping into a perfectly pitiful expression, she stepped out from the shadows.
"Phoenix, even now, are you still trying to frame me?" Phoebe smiled bitterly, shaking her head as her eyes grew red and teary. "Four years ago, when Mom and Dad brought you back, you couldn't stand the sight of me. You tried everything to drive me out. Just because I was an adopted daughter who took your place as the heiress for eighteen years."
"But I was innocent too. We were both just newborns when the mix-up happened. I didn't get to choose."
"I wanted us to get along, to take care of Mom and Dad together. But you didn't want that. You plotted against me at every turn just to win their favor. Then you sneaked out in the car Mom and Dad bought for me, caused that horrific crash, and tried to make me take the fall..."
Phoebe's voice broke, looking thoroughly devastated. "If Mom, Dad, and my brothers hadn't stood up for what was right and refused to let me be your scapegoat, I would probably be dead by now..."
