"What?!" Both Pierce and Phoenix were hit with a profound shock. The truth, buried deep within the years, slammed into their chests like a sledgehammer.
"The moment your mother died, Percival cast a net over the entire city. With his resources, no matter how clean Silas thought he was, there was no way he could hide it."
Arthur squeezed his eyes shut in agony, his heavily wrinkled face twisted in absolute remorse.
"The day he uncovered the truth, your father went after Silas with a knife. Back then, he looked like a demon crawling straight out of hell, determined to carve his wife's murderer into pieces!"
"It was me... I stopped him. For the sake of some ridiculous notion of family bloodlines, I collapsed at your father's feet and begged him. I literally begged him to spare Silas's pathetic life."
The raw, bloody history that had just been violently torn open left Pierce and Phoenix entirely speechless.
Arthur had been a proud, domineering man his entire life. To think he would throw away all his dignity and beg his own son just to save a piece of trash.
They could easily picture how that moment had completely shattered Percival's soul.
Pierce finally understood.
No wonder the patriarch had fiercely protected Silas even though the man was rotten to the core—because Silas's life was bought with Arthur's absolute humiliation, traded at the edge of his eldest son's blade.
"Your father finally relented. He let Silas live. But he couldn't extinguish the rage and grief consuming him. Every time he looked at Silas's face, he couldn't suppress the urge to kill him."
"So, his only option was to run."
Arthur aired out all the rotting wounds in one breath.
With the truth finally spoken, it looked as if a mountain had been lifted from his hunched shoulders.
The secret had gnawed at his heart like a venomous snake day and night. Now, he was finally free.
"Pierce, your father loves you more than anyone. But if he stayed in the country, he would be forced to look at his wife's killer every single day. That is the real reason he refused to set foot here all these years!"
"And... all those years you spent investigating the truth? I was the one pulling the strings from the shadows, severing every lead that pointed to your uncle." The old man wept bitterly. "If you want to hate someone, hate me."
