Blackwood Penitentiary.
Phoenix stepped foot in this place again solely because Yara had summoned her.
Given the current climate, Yara rarely reached out. Sitting in the sterile visitation room, Phoenix felt an inexplicable sense of dread, faintly sensing an impending storm.
"Phoenix, what's on your mind?" a cool, lazy voice interrupted her thoughts.
Phoenix looked up to see Yara strolling into view, a faint smile playing on her lips.
Her steps were measured, her posture elegant. She somehow managed to make a standard-issue prison uniform look like haute couture, radiating the suppressed aura of an absolute ruler with every movement.
"Yara, why did you call me here out of nowhere?" Phoenix got straight to the point. "Normally, unless something massive happens, you'd never ask to see me."
Yara sat across from her and offered a slight nod. "You're right. I wouldn't call you for anything trivial. But something just happened here that completely slipped out of my control."
"Huh?"
Phoenix paused, her face etched with shock.
Blackwood Penitentiary was Yara's absolute domain. Even the warden had to defer to her. How could anything possibly slip out of her control here?
"Phoebe Prescott is dead."
Those four words struck Phoenix like a hammer to the chest.
She couldn't care less whether Phoebe lived or died, but for her to die mysteriously right under Yara's nose was highly irregular.
"We've taken extremely 'good care' of her lately," Yara said, her striking eyes narrowing, a dangerous, icy glint flashing in their depths. "Our methods were harsh, sure, but always calculated. We were never going to kill her. Yet, last night, she suddenly dropped dead. We checked—she was poisoned."
Phoenix frowned deeply, her mind racing as she pieced together the clues.
"Phoebe dying is a good thing for me. But for someone to risk crossing you by poisoning her on your turf means her death... holds significant value." She abruptly looked up, meeting Yara's gaze. "In fact, this fire is aimed straight at me."
A look of approval appeared in Yara's eyes. "Spot on. Someone is using Phoebe's death to set a massive trap for you."
She paused, her tone growing heavy. "Do you still remember why I was locked up in here in the first place?"
"I remember." Phoenix nodded solemnly. "You weren't captured. You walked in here willingly. Because The Quincy Family in Highcrest used your father's life as leverage, forcing you to imprison yourself here, never to set foot outside Blackwood again."
Yara St. Claire, a brilliant and unparalleled prodigy, took control of her family the moment she came of age and stirred up the elite circles of Highcrest. Her brilliance attracted countless enemies, but she never expected the fatal blow to come from behind.
Her uncle, Quentin Quincy, wanted total dominance over The Sovereign Circle. To get it, he secretly slipped a rare, slow-acting poison into her father's food.
The poison had a long incubation period, and once it flared up, it was incurable. The only way to survive was by taking regular doses of the antidote, which Quentin controlled. Even the world's best doctors were helpless against it.
