"Loved me?" The final spark in Meredith's eyes completely died out, replaced by a devastating, freezing emptiness.
Yes, her grandfather had once "loved" her.
But when she was framed, that supposedly kind patriarch chose absolute silence.
She only learned later that his silence was to protect his more obedient grandson—Milo Miller.
During her four years in prison, the Miller family acted as if she were dead. No one visited. No one cared.
She had long ago let her final shreds of hope for their familial love die in that absolute despair.
The bitter irony was that just as she thought she was finally free, these demons crawled back out, viewing her merely as a "spare part" to extend their family's glory.
"Merry, listen to me." Marcus softened his tone, trying to play the emotional angle as he slowly approached the bed. "You've suffered a lot these past few years. If you just cooperate, the family will compensate you tenfold..."
"Hahahaha!" Meredith suddenly erupted into a horrific, agonizing burst of laughter, tears streaming down her face. "What's broken can't be fixed. Marcus, drop the hypocritical act. You make me sick!"
Before the words finished echoing, chaos erupted.
She violently threw her body upward. Her right hand, previously bound tight, actually slipped free from the restraints, and she clamped her hand brutally down onto Marcus's wrist!
Marcus's pupils shrank in terror as he stared at the hand holding him—
To break free of the ropes, she had ground her own wrist down to the bone. The flesh was torn open and dripping with blood.
The fragile little sister who used to cry for hours over a scraped knee had literally shredded her own flesh, enduring agonizing pain and struggling relentlessly for an entire night!
"Go to hell!!"
Her scream sounded like a demon crawling out from the abyss.
Meredith grabbed the heavy glass vase from the nightstand with her left hand, throwing every ounce of her remaining strength into it, and smashed it violently against the back of Marcus's head.
CRASH!
The vase shattered into pieces.
Without even a groan, Marcus's eyes rolled back, and he collapsed limply to the floor.
Now was her chance!
Fighting off intense dizziness, Meredith desperately untied the ropes on her legs and stumbled wildly toward the door.
Bang!
The door was kicked open. The guard outside stood frozen, entirely stunned by the sudden turn of events.
Taking advantage of his split-second hesitation, Meredith shot past him like a terrified, cornered wolf, sprinting madly down the hallway.
"You useless idiots! What are you staring at?! Grab her!"
Lost in despair, Meredith's head snapped up. At the end of the corridor, a slender yet imposing figure walked forward, backlit by the lights. That familiar, commanding presence looked exactly like the guardian angel who had stood up for her in prison, stomping the bullies beneath her boots.
"Phoenix... you're finally here..."
The tears she had fought so hard to hold back finally broke through.
Phoenix's eyes swept over Meredith's mutilated wrists, and a tidal wave of fury instantly erupted within her. The violent, bloodthirsty aura radiating from her seemed to freeze the very air in the corridor.
She raised a hand, pointing a single finger directly at Marcus. Her voice was as cold as the depths of hell: "Leo, beat them! As long as they're breathing, beat them half to death!!"
"Yes, ma'am!"
Feeling his boss's explosive rage, Leo Vance waved a massive hand and roared, "Boys, take 'em down!"
The elite fighters of The Obsidian Syndicate flooded the hall like starving wolves. While they might not possess the clinical precision of professional bodyguards, their sheer numbers and overwhelming ferocity completely shattered the Miller family guards' formation in seconds.
Amidst the chaos, Phoenix strode right through the brawl. She caught Meredith's swaying body, pulling the girl securely into her arms.
"Shh, don't cry. I'm here. It's okay now."
"They bullied me... They wanted to cut out my kidney..." Meredith gripped Phoenix's shirt desperately, weeping uncontrollably. Like a deeply wronged child finally seeing her family, all her forced resilience vanished in an instant.
"I know," Phoenix patted her back gently. She looked up at the pale-faced Marcus standing nearby, murderous intent churning violently in her eyes. "I'll make them pay for this. A thousand times over!"
