“Are you dense?” Tobias scoffed. “All they’d have to do is pick a warehouse, quietly move everything out ahead of time, then stage a break-in and claim it was robbed. Who here is actually going to investigate whether anything was stolen? Then explain this to me Those missing tycoons had warehouses full of supplies. Where did all that inventory go? If it isn’t hidden somewhere inside the city, then where? And besides those four families, who else could absorb that much stock?”

Geoffrey’s face had gone pale. “That actually makes sense. He gripped Tobias’s sleeve. “So what do we do? Just sit here and let them bleed us dry?”

“What exactly can we do?” Tobias lowered his voice. “We’re guests here, living on borrowed ground. That’s why I’ve been scrambling to trade every last ounce of my gold for supplies. Mr. Gound loves gold. If I keep sitting on mine, it’s only a matter of time before he decides it belongs to him.”

“Trade it for supplies? What kind of supplies?” Geoffrey seized Tobias by the arm. “Tobias, come on. If you’ve found a supplier, don’t leave me out. I’ve got plenty of gold myself, and I’m losing sleep over it.”

“I wouldn’t do that to you. Tell you what, I’ve made contact with a guy named Silas Wilson. He’s got medicine, protective suits, and even nard-to-find luxuries like condoms and cigarettes. This opportunity won’t come around twice. Who knows how long this acid rain-is going to last? I’ve already stored enough food to last the rest of my life. Now it’s survival gear that matters.”

“Count me in,” Geoffrey said without hesitation. “Whatever you do, save me a spot.”

The same conversation unfolded in every corner of the central shelter where wealthy survivors gathered.

While Silas stayed comfortably at home, business came knocking on his door.

These past few days, Silas had been so busy he was nearly losing his mind.

Orders poured in faster than he could keep up with them, every/transaction paid in gold.

For days on end, he couldn’t eat or sleep without that idiotic grin plastered across his face.

Autumn was no less occupied. She was busy filling orders.

After taking in such an enormous mountain of gold, it would have been criminal not to put her ten-thousandfold duplication to

work.

Take from the rich. Sell back to the rich.

Boxes of condoms, Vital Blue tablets, medicinal herbs of every kind, modern medicine, protective suits, industrial protective materials, coatings, everything from saffron to angelica roots streamed endlessly from her storage space. One shipment after another found its way into the hands of wealthy buyers across the shelter, while their gold reserves flowed steadily back to her

In the beginning, Autumn had counted. She’d tallied each day’s take with something approaching childish delight

Eventually she gave up. There was simply too much.

The rumors spread like wildfire, growing more outrageous with every retelling, and more wealthy survivors joined the buying frenzy by the day.

By the time Gordon and the three families caught wind of it, nearly every affluent resident in the city had become involved in one way or another.

“Enough.” Gordon raised a hand as representatives from the Carters, Yorks, and Blakes fumed around the table. “The only reason they’re spreading these rumors is to destroy our reputation. Tell me about this Silas Witson.”

Noah answered first. “He came from Karthmoor with a group of a little over twenty people. I’ve had every one of them investigated. Nothing suspicious turned up. More importantly, when the massacres happened, all of them were drinking with my son. They couldn’t possibly have been involved. His supply chain remains a mystery. He won’t say, but every so often someone quietly delivers shipments through the city gates after dark. They always come from the north. My guess is the Jyncrest shelter supplies them.”

‘Jyncrest?” Gordon’s eyes narrowed with interest. “That would explain the advanced protective suits-they always did have the best research facilities up there. Interesting that Karthmoor let him go so easily.”

‘They didn’t let him go, exactly.” Noah’s tone turned sly. “My son mentioned some… interpersonal complications. Someone in Karthmoor took an interest in Silas, but he didn’t reciprocate. Things went sour.”

‘Oh?” Gordon chuckled. “Letting someone like that walk away… Mr. Marsh must be chewing his own arm off about now.”
