Not a flicker of emotion crossed Autumn’s eyes as she pressed the tip of her blade to his throat. “You just said there’s a place where anyone who gets bought and taken there vanishes without a trace,” she said. “Where is it?”

“Huh?” Erling was slow to catch on, and it was a few seconds before he blurted out, “It’s Mr. Gound!”

“Gordon Gound?” Autumn paused. “He buys people?”

“That s right. People on the outside don’t know, but I do, and the one buying them is Mr. Gound. He only wants the young and able- bodied, anyone from 16 to 46. So many of them just vanished without warning.” Erling’s whole body shook as he stammered on. ‘Later, when fewer people started going missing on their own, he came to us and had us abduct them, and once we did, we handed them straight over to him. The word ‘is that everyone who got taken was sent down to dig coal. The only reason the shelter made it through the extreme cold is that Mr. Gound found a massive coal mine down there.”

‘A coal mine?” Autumn raised an eyebrow. Now that she thought about it, the central shelter really was sitting right in the middle of coal country.

Could this coal mine be Gordon’s ace in the hole?

Was it also the reason the three big families kept their distance from him?

‘Mister, I told you the truth. Will you let me go?” Erling looked at her, full of hope. “I swear I didn’t have a choice!”

‘It’s possible,” Autumn answered with a smile. “As long as I like the answers.”

Erling’s face lit up and he rushed on. “Mr. Gound has a son named Griffin, and Griffin’s favorite pastime is eating people.”

“Huh?” Autumn didn’t look the least bit surprised. “That’s not good enough.”

‘There’s more, there’s more! I also know Griffin secretly built a place called the Vault, where the wine flows like water and every ndulgence you can imagine is laid out, and every rich man in the shelter dreams of getting in. And I’ve heard there are endless upplies down there, all of it Gordon’s private stash. I’ve also heard Gordon knew the apocalypse was coming long before anyone else, so he got his hands on a mountain of gold and hid every last bit of it in the Vault. The gold he keeps out in the open is just a decoy, a cover for the Vault itself.” The words came pouring out of him. “Mister, just let me go and I’ll take you straight there

‘Let me ask you something,” Autumn said. “What’s Gordon’s biggest ace in the hole?”

‘I don’t understand what you mean. How would I know that?” Erling looked completely lost.

But Autumn only smiled. “Is that so? Then let me ask you this instead. Where exactly in the Vault is Gordon’s gold hidden?”

‘How could I possibly know something like that? You’re giving me far too much credit, mister.” Erling smiled back “I’m just a small time drifter, nothing more.”

Autumn drew back her saber, reached out, and roughly seized Erling’s jaw, forcing his head up until he was looking at her. Her ton turned flippant. “Oh? Is that right? If the Gounds’ youngest heir is nothing but a small time drifter, then what does that make me?

The instant the words left her mouth, the innocent look drained from Erling’s face, his expression turning vicious as he opened his mouth to shout for help.

But fast as he was, Autumn was faster, and she popped his jaw clean out of its socket.

Erling sprawled on the ground, mouth gaping, drool spilling out beyond his control, glaring at Autumn with pure hatred

It was as if he were asking how she’d seen through him.

Autumn was never one to waste words, so of course she wasn’t about to explain. She simply gave Erling’s cheek a light pat “Thank you for walking right up to my door.”

The moment she finished speaking, she reached out and snapped his neck.

In the instant before he died, he seemed unable to believe he was really being killed just like that.

Why hadn’t Autumn fallen for it?

The answer was simple.

In her past life, Autumn had heard that the man who ran the central shelter, on top of the son everyone knew about, also had an illegitimate son out in the world handling the jobs that couldn’t see the light of day.

The Vault Erling had just mentioned was a prime example.

So the moment Erling singled her out, Autumn knew she’d been made, that someone had her in their sights.

She didn’t know where she’d slipped up, but it didn’t matter, and she’d simply kill every last person who suspected her.

The Vault, huh?

Then she’d go take a look.

“This time I wasn’t the one who came looking for you. You came after me first.” Autumn sliced Erling’s head clean off with one easy motion and gave it a deliberate shake. “So don’t blame me for taking what fell right into my lap.”

Outside, the acid rain still gave off its sharp, stinging smell, leaving everyone unsettled.

But down beneath one of the shelter’s abandoned buildings, it was all indulgence and excess.

The air hung thick with some unfamiliar sweetness, laced with perfume and liquor, enough to leave your head swimming before you’d even taken two sips.

Autumn wore a long, wavy brown wig and flawless glamour makeup, and her long, toned legs drew every eye in the room

The guard working the outer checkpoint gave her only a single glance, and once he was satisfied that a woman in nothing but a short skirt couldn’t possibly be hiding a weapon, he waved her through.

Days like this all blurred into the same dull routine. Some beautiful woman or another would willingly show up barely dressed, day after day, so the wealthy men could look them over like merchandise.
