Silas waited until they were gone before speaking. “Nubody sleeps during the day today. Stay awake a little longer, then go to bed early tonight. We can’t afford to give them anything they can use against us.”
“Understood.”
Five days passed in the blink of an eye.
During those five days, the entire shelter suffered.
Gordon and the other three families took turns conducting searches, tearing through every corner of the city. Every person was searched at least three times, as if they truly intended to dig three feet into the ground.
The slums outside the city walls had it even worse. Those people were already living in poverty. Their flimsy shacks barely withstood the acid rain as it was. One hard kick from the search teams was enough to send them collapsing to the ground.
‘et no one dared complain. Anyone who protested was simply dragged into the acid rain and left there until they died.
After venting their anger on the poor, the search teams simply walked away without the slightest concern.
That was life in the apocalypse.
Five days later…
hey finally seemed exhausted. The searches became far less frequent.
Autumn reminded everyone, “Just because they’re searching less doesn’t mean they’ve lowered their guard. We still need to be careful.”
I agree,” Leonel said. “From now on, we focus only on business. Nothing else.”
Just then, Silas walked in from outside. “Big news today. The Blakes’ young lady, Emily, is publicly choosing a husband. Half the
helter has gone to watch.”
What?” Autumn blinked. “This isn’t ancient times. Why is she holding a public husband selection? Didn’t any of the rich young nen catch her eye?”
Leonel smiled faintly. “I think this was arranged specifically for people like us.”
“Huh?” Autumn didn’t understand.
‘They can’t catch the thieves openly, so they’ve set a trap instead,” Leonel explained. “Emily is the Blakes’ only daughter. She’s their heir, holds real authority, and she’s quite beautiful. Now imagine they announce that whoever marries into the Blakes will nherit the family’s wealth and position. Don’t you think someone would be tempted?”
Autumn blinked again. “That sounds like an amazing deal.”
“If even you think so,” Leonel said with a smile, “then imagine the leader of some mysterious criminal organization Wouldn t they be tempted too? No matter how successful they are outside, it can’t compare to living safely inside the shelter, inheriting the Blakes’ fortune, and having a beautiful wife”

Beckett nodded in agreement. “A young man who’s succeeded over and over again is easily blinded by confidence. Success breeds arrogance. From a criminal psychology standpoint, offenders often return to the scene or closely observe the aftermath just to admire their own handiwork. Even if they know it’s a trap, curiosity atone might lure them in.”
Autumn’s eyes widened. “So they’re laying the trap out in the open. But why are they so certain the culprit is a man?”
Leonel didn’t answer. He simply looked her up and down. Autumn awkwardly rubbed her cheek.
Fair enough. The way she walked… The way she spoke… She really did come across as rather masculine these days.
Beckett chuckled. “The Blakes certainly aren’t holding back. They’re even using their own daughter as bait. Aren’t they worried someone might take the bait and run?”
Leonel shook his head. “I doubt Emily is someone to underestimate. Otherwise, the Blakes would’ve raised another heir long ago.
Good point.” Autumn nodded. “So… are we going to take a look?”
Leonel smiled. “Watching the show couldn’t hurt. We’re not exactly busy.”
The three exchanged a knowing high-five.
Emily’s public husband selection was being held inside one of the shelter’s enormous indoor stadiums.
The vast arena was already packed with young men.
Just as Autumn had predicted, quite a few people were eager to take this shortcut to success.
Autumn, Leonel, and Beckett paid fifty grams of gold for a private viewing box. The seats offered an excellent view of nearly the entire venue.
The Blakes really know how to make money,” Autumn said with a laugh. “Whether they actually find a husband or not, they’ve already earned a fortune just from selling these private boxes. Look at the rooms around us. They’re all full.”
They’ve always had a good head for business,” Leonel replied. “Even before the apocalypse, the Blakes ranked among the wealthiest families in the country.”
Look Beckett pointed toward the stage. “Emily’s coming out.”
Autumn followed his gaze. On the raised platform stood a young woman dressed in a crisp white pantsuit. She carried herself with unmistakable pride.
The moment she appeared, thunderous cheers erupted throughout the stadium.
“She’s definitely beautiful,” Autumnn admitted with a grin. “Too bad I’m not interested in women.”
Both Beckett and Leonel turned to look at her.
