Markus possessed a special ability to detect dishonesty, a gift he had never shared with anyone, not even his family. As a child, he used it to get out of trouble and later decided to keep it to himself. He never imagined he would need to use it on his own mother. Stinger howled in anger inside him, but Markus urged him to stay calm. “We will get to the bottom of this. For now, we have dinner to attend and a mother to question. We will get to the bottom of this no matter what.”
Determined, Markus made his way toward the dining hall, his mind set on uncovering the truth.
As he entered the dining hall, the clatter of silverware and muted conversation filled the room. The royal family and some of the council members were gathered, along with a few prominent guests. Queen Tonya sat at the table, her regal demeanor intact as she engaged in polite conversation. She observed him with a curious look, but he maintained his composure, engaging in small talk despite the boiling rage inside him. He couldn’t help but notice Angelica’s presence at the table along with her family, with whom he made polite conversation.
Queen Tonya smiled, satisfied seeing this and said, “What a wonderful surprise to have you join us, Markus. You’ve been missing dinners in the dining hall this past week.”
Markus nodded but didn’t say anything more. His mother then asked, “Won’t our guest, Lady Kaia,
be joining us for dinner?”
Markus struggled to keep his emotions in check as he replied, “Lady Kaia had to return to her
family.”
“What a pity,” the Queen remarked with feigned disappointment. “It would have been lovely to have
dinner with her before her departure.”
Markus felt a stab in his chest, recognizing the falsehood in his mother’s words. His ability, which
he activated before entering the dining hall, confirmed the insincerity of her comment. His rage
simmered just below the surface, threatening to boil over. How didn’t he notice till now that his
mother didn’t like Kaia?
Angelica chimed in, “It is a pity indeed, but we all know that Lady Kaia is not a social person.”
Unable to contain himself, Markus looked directly at Angelica and replied, “And how do you know? I didn’t realize you were so familiar with Lady Kaia.”
Angelica flushed scarlet, struggling for a response, while his mother quickly intervened. “Markus, Angelica was just stating the obvious. We all know that Lady Kaia is a private person.”
Markus nodded at his mother, his voice dripping with controlled anger. “It must be the age difference then between Lady Angelica and Lady Kaia, as I am quite familiar with the Stormheart

Angelica became even more flustered, unable to form a reply. His mother opened her mouth to respond, but Markus cut her off. “Excuse me, Mother, but after dinner, I would appreciate it if I could discuss the Royal Courtship with you and Father.”
A hush fell over the table. Queen Tonya, taken aback, asked, “Is everything all right, son? I assure you that everything is under control. You will not be disappointed.”
Markus replied, “I’m sure it is, Mother, but you don’t expect me to be idle like a puppet. In the end, this will determine my future mate. So, I believe I definitely have something to say regarding the
process, don’t you think?”
Queen Tonya was speechless, not expecting this assertiveness from him. She quickly recovered, saying, “I imagined you were so busy with royal duties, and I didn’t want you to burden yourself with
this.”
Markus smiled tightly, “Don’t be silly, Mother. I’m busy, but not so busy that I can dump everything on you. I need to hear every single detail about this competition.”
His father looked at him with suspicion, while his mother, slightly flustered, nodded. “Of course, my
dear.”
After dinner, as they were about to leave the table, Markus addressed his parents. “Let’s talk in my
study.”
“You want to talk tonight?” his mother asked, still trying to regain control of the situation.
