Traitor?-1
The next morning, the sun filtered through the windows of the grand dining hall as Kaia and Markus finished their breakfast in relative silence. The weight of the previous day’s events still lingered between them, but there was an unspoken understanding that today would bring its own set of challenges. Kaia could feel the tension in the air, the anticipation of what was to come as they prepared for the council meeting.
After breakfast, they made their way to the Council Chamber, where the members of the pack’s governing body were already assembled, along Azriel as well. The atmosphere was thick with anticipation, and as Kaia and Markus entered the room, all eyes turned to them.
Councilman Carter was particularly agitated. He paced back and forth, his eyes narrowing as he noticed their arrival. The other Council members exchanged curious glances, sensing the tension that radiated from him.
Markus took his seat at the head of the table, with Kaia by his side. He glanced around the room, acknowledging the Council members before addressing them. “Thank you all for coming. I know many of you are eager for an update on our plans regarding the Lycans.”
Before he could continue, Councilman Carter interrupted, his voice sharp with impatience. “Why haven’t the troops moved out yet as we agreed? We’ve been preparing for this attack, and every moment we delay, we risk showing weakness to our enemies. Time is of the essence now.”
Markus blinked in surprise at the forcefulness of Carter’s tone. The councilman was known for his
cunning nature, but there was an unusual edge and direct approach to his words today.
“We’ve decided to delay the attack based on new information that has come to light,” Markus replied calmly, though his eyes remained fixed on Carter.
“Delay?” Carter repeated, incredulous. “We can’t afford to hesitate now. This is the time to strike, to
show our strength and eliminate the threat before it grows any larger. We must not waver!”
His agitation was palpable, and it rippled through the room, causing a stir among the other Council members. Kaia felt the tension rising, but she remained silent, watching the exchange carefully.
Markus’s patience began to wear thin. He straightened in his chair, his voice firm as he responded, “I understand your concerns, Councilman, but we cannot rush into a battle without fully assessing the situation. The new information we’ve received suggests that the Lycans have moved from their
previous location. Attacking now would be walking into a trap, and I will not risk the lives of our
people by a poorly timed assault.”

Carter’s eyes flashed with frustration. “We’ve already committed resources to this attack, and now
you’re suggesting we back down? Who is this new source?”
Markus’s annoyance was obvious as he shot back, “I’m suggesting we be smart about this. I will
not lead our forces into a situation where they could be ambushed. If that means delaying the
attack to ensure our victory, then so be it. And, about the identity of my source, it can’t be
disclosed at the moment, but I assure you that it is a reliable one.”
The room fell silent, the tension thick enough to cut with a knife. Carter glared at Markus, his jaw
clenched in frustration, but he said nothing more. The other council members exchanged uneasy
glances, sensing the conflict between their leader and the councilman.
As the tension in the council chamber began to settle, Markus took a deep breath, gathering his
thoughts before addressing the Council once more. He cleared his throat, drawing the attention of
everyone in the room. The Council members turned their eyes to him, sensing that there was more
to discuss.
“I would like to address a second topic,” Markus began, his voice calm but carrying a weight that
made the room grow quiet again. “We are in a critical time, and the absence of any Council
member in these dire circumstances is not only unacceptable but also a dereliction of duty.”
The council members exchanged puzzled glances, unsure of where Markus was leading. The air in
the room thickened with a mix of curiosity and unease.
Markus continued, his gaze sweeping across the room, making sure to meet the eyes of each
council member. “I am specifically referring to Councilman Stone. It appears that he has decided
to take a vacation or time off or just abandon his duties without informing anyone, ignoring his
responsibilities during one of the most critical moments we have faced.”
