Traitor?-2

Murmurs of disbelief rippled through the room, as the council members exchanged concerned looks as they looked towards the councilman’s empty chair. Councilman Stone was known for his Council’s long tenure and being close to the royal family, and his sudden disappearance was both surprising and troubling.

“If any of you are closer to him,” Markus continued, his tone growing firmer, “please advise him to stop ignoring my calls and to report for duty immediately. If he continues to ignore his responsibilities, he will have to answer to me directly, and I assure you, that will not be a pleasant conversation.”

The warning in Markus’s voice was clear, and the Council members nodded in agreement, understanding the gravity of the situation. No one dared to speak out of turn, recognizing the seriousness of Markus’s words.

This is all for now,” Markus concluded, his tone final. “You are dismissed.”

The Council members rose from their seats, each giving a respectful nod to Markus before quietly exiting the room. As the Council members began to file out of the room, Carter lingered for a moment, his expression dark and brooding, before finally leaving as well.

As the door closed behind the last of the council members, Markus remained seated, his thoughts swirling. He could feel the pressure of leadership bearing down on him, but he knew that showing any weakness now would be disastrous. Councilman Stone’s unexplained absence had to be addressed and covered, so he chose an offensive approach rather than defensive.

Azriel, who had been standing quietly by the door, approached Markus once the room was empty. “That was well-handled,” he said, his voice low.

Once the door closed behind the last of the council members, Markus turned to Azriel, who had remained silent throughout the meeting. “Is it just me,” Markus began, his voice laced with suspicion, “or was Councilman Carter a bit too eager to push for this attack?”

Azriel, who had been watching Carter closely during the meeting, nodded thoughtfully. “Hmmm,” he murmured, his tone equally suspicious. “It’s definitely unusual. Carter has always been aggressive, but today he seemed… desperate.”

Markus leaned back in his chair, rubbing his chin as he considered Azriel’s words. “Desperate, indeed. Almost as if he’s trying to force our hand, regardless of the risks.”

Azriel crossed his arms, his expression pensive. “It’s worth looking into. We’ve always known Carter to be loyal to the pack, but this level of urgency, especially in light of the new information,

raises some red flags.”

Kaia, who had been silently observing, finally spoke up. “Could there be more to this than we know? Perhaps someone is pressuring him, or he’s acting on information we’re not aware of.”

Markus frowned, the gears turning in his mind. “It’s possible. We need to be cautious. If Carter is being influenced by someone else or has his own agenda, it could jeopardize everything we’re working toward.”

Azriel nodded in agreement. “I’ll start looking into it, discreetly. We can’t afford to have any internal disruptions right now, especially with the lycan threat looming.” Markus stood, a determined look in his eyes. “Do that. And in the meantime, we’ll proceed with our plans to fortify our defenses. If Carter’s behavior is part of a larger issue, we need to be ready for anything.”

“I have a better suggestion,” Kaia replied, as she moved toward the chair where Councilman Carter had been seated earlier. Her determination was clear. Markus and Azriel watched her closely, their

expressions a mix of concern and hope.

Kaia placed her hands gently on the chair, her fingers brushing over the fabric as she closed her eyes and cleared her mind. She tried to focus, willing her vision to come forth, to show her something, anything, that might give them an edge in this increasingly complex situation. She waited, breathing slowly and deeply, but after a few moments, there was nothing.

A deep sigh escaped her lips as her shoulders sagged in disappointment. She opened her eyes and looked at Markus and Azriel, her voice heavy with regret. “I’m sorry… nothing.”

Markus shook his head immediately, his voice gentle but firm. “Don’t be silly, Kaia. You’re doing everything you can, and I’m grateful for that.”
