"A divorce?!"
Lydia's screech was so shrill it nearly blew the roof off.
Recovering from the shock, she glared at Nora as if looking at a complete failure.
"Do you have any idea how many women in Metropolis would kill to marry into the Blackwood family? Getting into that family was the greatest stroke of luck you'll ever have! You're throwing away your position as Mrs. Blackwood for a divorce? Have you completely lost your mind?"
Nora maintained her deadpan expression.
"You can have that luck then."
Lydia choked on her outrage and immediately snapped her head toward the stairs, screaming.
"Marcus! Marcus!"
Marcus quickly hurried out of his study and rushed downstairs.
"What's wrong, honey?"
Lydia pointed an accusatory finger at Nora, her face twisting in a sneer.
"Look at your wonderful daughter. I merely mentioned asking York to secure a villa for Yancey's wedding, and she goes completely psycho, claiming she's divorcing York! I wash my hands of her. Talk some sense into your kid before she ruins her life. If she throws away her status as Mrs. Blackwood, she'll be crying when it's too late!"
Hearing this, Marcus looked utterly stunned.
"You want to divorce York?"
He knew quite well how deeply Nora had loved York for years.
He also knew the immense backlash and vicious gossip she had endured just to marry him.
Now that the dust had settled, their relationship seemed perfectly stable. York even came over occasionally to share a meal with him.
Why on earth would she suddenly want a divorce when everything was fine?
Nora lowered her eyelashes, masking a fleeting glint of agonizing pain.
"Yes."
Marcus gently pulled her toward the sofa to sit down.
"But why? Weren't things going so well? Did York mistreat you?"
