Daddy?!
Nora squeezed her phone until her knuckles turned white, unable to stop the gasp that tore from her lips.
"York Blackwood!"
But a sharp *beep* pierced her ear. The line had already gone dead.
Nora frantically redialed, staring at the screen with manic intensity.
The suffocating tide of betrayal rising in her chest threatened to pull her under.
Pick up.
Why aren't you picking up?
Didn't you say you were working late?
Since when did he have someone calling him 'Daddy' in his office?
When she dialed for the third time, she was met with the mechanical, icy voice of the automated operator: "The number you have dialed is currently powered off."
Powered off?
He had shut his phone down without offering a single excuse. Was he that terrified she would interrupt their precious family time?
Then again, to York, she had always been completely disposable.
How could she ever compare to Sienna? How could she possibly be more important than his own daughter?
Her mind was painfully clear, but her heart felt as if it were being repeatedly crushed under a mortar and pestle. The agony was so intense she couldn't even breathe.
She fiercely gripped the fabric over her chest, pressing her fist into her sternum as if physical pressure could somehow stave off the excruciating pain.
But the pain only deepened, escalating until she could no longer endure it.
"Ah!"
She let out a guttural scream of absolute devastation, blindly sweeping everything off the dining table.
*Crash—*
The floor was instantly covered in a chaotic mess of shattered porcelain and ruined food.
The only sound left in the cavernous room was her muffled, desperate sobbing.
Nora didn't know how long she sat frozen in that chair, weeping uncontrollably.
It wasn't until her eyes burned and swelled shut that she finally snapped out of her daze.
